Hi, the tires on my 89 ram 4x4 are 31x10.5x15. They are bald and need to be replaced.

What are my options in comparable tire sizes (As big or slightly bigger)? Felt like when I looked up my specific size the tires were very expensive, is that because it's a metric size, a rare size, or do I have wheels that are a rare size?

Please forgive my ignorance, I don't know much about tire sizes and wheels. I just want tires that are at as big or slightly bigger than what I have now at the most affordable price, it's not a wheeler truck just a dependable daily driver.

I believe this is a stock size but its around a 29x9.3x15. He wants the same 31" tire size.

I looked at the metric conversion site. Says its exactly 267/76r15. I looked up sizes close to that, and they all start around $125 a piece.

For a daily Adam the 31 10.50's are actually kinda deadly. I ran them on my '86 (I posted a pic of it when you asked about lift kits), and in the snow there is ZERO steering. All they do is slide. They are a fair weather tire only.

I pulled them off and went with 265/75/15's and it made a world of difference. Height was the same as 31's and were close to 2 inches narrower. Highly recommend.

I'll counter griz here, run 31*10.50 for years, no problems.

A good all terrain or mud tread is fine for year round use.

Closest metric size is 265-75-15, kind of odd.

Keep in mind that 15" rims are starting to become an odd size. Bigger rims are taking over in popularity.

Also, 31 is about the limit on saggy stock springs, 33" with new springs or a lift.

My Durango came with 31 10.5 15's. Loved the Michelin LTXs, but couldn't bring myself to spend the money for another set with as many miles as it has. I put some cheap 235/75/15 Goodyear Wranglers from Walmart that were pretty decent for the money on an old truck. Got a little less than 40K out of them, but the front end is pretty loose and was never aligned after I replaced an upper control arm. Just put two of Hankook H724s on the back for winter.

If you can run 16s 245/75/16 and 265/75/16 are both very close to 31x10.50x15
265/75/16 is closer to the 31x10.50 then the 245/75/16s are.
If your sticking with 15s they also make a 30x9.50x15 and a 31x9.50x15 but they aren't as popular.
I like 15s because they are a little cheaper and you can run lower air pressure for a softer ride and to help get out of hairy situations. 16s are tougher then 15s and a tad bit more expensive but there are a lot more sizes available and they are more popular.

I was forced to act quickly and put some used tires of the same size on today. The belts in the front tires were separating, jerking the steering wheel every rotation.
Also today, I replaced the tie rod ends and center link.
Ball joints are ok.
I installed a borgeson steering shaft as well.

Steering is nice now! But Im still getting a noise up front, Cah-klack-Cah-klack-Cah-klack it increases with wheel speed. The only thing left I can think of making the noise is wheel bearings. When I had the front end up earlier today I didnt even think to spin the wheels as I thought the noise was coming from loose tie rod ends banging around. Ill check it out tomorrow.

Gotta say though, it was surprisingly way easier to work on a Power Ram front end than my charger.

Ill get some some mileage out of these used tires then decide which way to go. Thanks for all the info.

That'll be your outer axle u-joints making the noise.

Easy to work on you say? laugh2 Wait until you have to do front axle seals. down

A 245-75-16 is nearly exactly the diameter of the 31-10.50-15, which are usually 30.5" tall.
a 265-75-16 matches up nicely with a 32-11.50-15, this is from personal experience. Both run about 31.5" tall.

There are 265-70-16s which are lighter duty, regularly, and those are also in line with the 10.50-15 tires, and about the same width.

That is one of many reasons that I no longer bother with the 4x4 trucks laugh

I had a 1977 W200 with 440/727 that I bought new and put a lift in it with 12.00 x 16.5 Desert Dogs, it was cool but not very practical. I had a 1997 Jeep TJ with the 4.0 6 and it came with 30/950R15s and it beat me up. Now I have a 1998 Ram QuadCab 2wd with 245/75/R16s with aggressive tread and if it snows I stay home, cause I don't have to be anywhere. My wife has a Honda Element with AWD and she can go wherever we need to go.

In my area it is still cool to have a lifted diesel 4x4, but it does not make sense for me. I have other things to spend my money on.

A 285 70 15 is 11.4" wide and 30.94" tall.

Grizzly! I dont know if it was myself or you that just jinxed me, but Ive spent the last 3 hours taking out the driver wheel axle and replacing the u joint, the cause of the clicking. Everything is covered in dirt and grease, so its very tedious work getting it all apart and then clean.

Nah, no jinx, I got about 1.1 million miles on First and Second Gen Rams so some stuff just pops right off the screen at me. wink

Hope you don't have that axle in just yet: I have a little trick for you to get it back in there without damaging the seal.

I got it all back together. I would been open to advice but I powered through it and then replaced a radiator in my sisters car so just now back online. I cleaned everything spotless, installed new u joint, applied new grease, and put it all back together. The twist on rings inside the hub were a little stressful, as I wasnt quite sure how tight to twist them, but pretty much assembled everything identically how it came apart.

I guess my question is, what do you consider expensive for a tire of that size? Discount Tire has that size listed on their website for around $110 a tire; I don't think that is bad at all for a brand new tire.
