Hey, thought I would ask you very knowledgeable folks what you thought. I always wanted a Rod, so I bought this 38 Plymouth business coupe. I have all the pieces, fenders, ect and they are near perfect.

However lately, I have been really enjoying the gassers I have been seeing. It made me wonder if I should do a gasser instead.

I actually like the old school stuff but I want something I can drive long distances and have some comfort in.
I dont know how gassers handle, drive, ect.

I am going to do more down the road, so do you think I am better off doing a Rod or a gasser if its something I am going to drive longer distances or a lot? I know little of either, so I have to learn both.

Dave

I vote rod if it's going to be driven alot. The old straight axle gasser will beat you to death on long trips not to mention rattle the car to pieces.

I built a '52 Plymouth Business Coupe gasser, fun around town car, but handled and rode like my solid axle '57 Chevy truck (go figure! ).

Wanna drive it? Rod!

Wanna race it? Gasser!

Dave, as much as I love the gasser style cars(and I plan to build one with the willys sedan that I have)
getting the chassis just right so it drives and handles good is a challenge.
if you already had a good driver streetrod and you wanted a cool gasser I would say go for it.
but if this is going to be your nice riding long distance driver I would say go with the streetrod style car.

now if you get another rod that you want as a driver friendly car then I would build the coupe as a gasser.

to make a axel car work good I would go with a cross steer set up like they do with all the ford rods out there.

these cars look cool but I bet they would not be so fun on a cross country trip, a cool trip, Yes but not so fun all the time..... Ron....

this is about as "GASSER" as you can get

willys sedan

my willys project that will be a GASSER

I think this would be a better choice for you

Ron, nice looking car. I have no idea on how to chop this machine and would only destroy it I am sure, so it will have to stay stock, but WOW THAT chop looks nice on that rig.

Yeah, Dave. I'm a gasser fan...building one as we speak, but I gotta say that for driveability...rods have it down. If a Friday night cruiser/light-to-lighter was all you were going for, it'd be a gasser all the way, but I see you wanting to drive this cross country if the urge hit you, based on some of your other thrreads.

Technically, He isn't a member. I posted the picture of my buddies car. The cool thing about that purple '38 is that was the first car he did. He took a few classes in the evening to learn the metal work at a tech school locally. He did the chop himself and it WAS his first one!!!! That, to me , puts that car into a whole other perspective. It is on a Dodge Dakota chassis with airbag suspension. Here are his 3 cars together. (He just finished the hot rod, and the '57 chevy he has had for about 40 years. It was his first paint job, flames and all.)

Gasser or Rodder would be a tough choice for me, I love them BOTH!
You sure started with a nice car!

I'm sure rodding the car would lend itself more to long distance driving, I wonder if anybody has come up with a way to make a long distance haul in a gasser style car more comfortable? I'm sure SOMEBODY must have some pretty good ideas?
Maybe the HAMB?

Whichever way you decide

No, seriously, after me and a buddy built the solid axle '52, we drove it over 400 hundred miles round trip to the Paso Robles Memorial Day show.

Even with cross steering, it was still a bumpy, rough ride that liked to chase ruts in the freeway.

Paso Robles 2005 show

You can "man up" and deal with it, because it's certainly not impossible to drive, I have 12,000 miles under my daily driver, stock solid front axle '57 Chevy truck.

If you want a cushy, enjoyable car to drive a lot? You don't want a solid axle.
