What did they bolt to? The wheel studs? It sounds a little like ... Moon Discs.

It sounds like you are describing NASCAR style floating hub axles. This means the cover you describe comes off and the axle is splined on both ends and the hub is splined and has bearings like the front wheels do. Google floating hubs for stock cars and you will probably see what you want. Gus
