I have a picture of one of the heads my brother melted the zinc into. Too bad photobucket is busted or I'd toss it on here.

The heat crossover openings in an Olds head are huge. No way would tin foil or fishing weights do the job.

Do you put the aluminum foil balls in the passage in the head OR the manifold?

In the head, that way the heat was kept off of the gasket & as far away from the carb as possible but actually now that you mention it I believe either would suffice.

If I was gonna pound a buncha crap in there I'd back it up with wadded up $100,00 bills so when it finally melts/breaks loose and sucks it into a cylinder I'd at least have the cash on hand to fix it.

You may find this page interesting, it reccomends not blocking the crossover on the 340-6;

When I did my 360 I couldn't find a gasket with it blocked off like you did, but for some reason the fel-pro gasket kit I had came with 2 extra 318 gaskets with the cross over blocked. So I cut that part out with some snips and used some rtv to them hold onto the head while I put the intake with the regular 360 gaskets on.

About a year later I had the intake off cause I broke a push rod and noticed that the tin had burned through in that time. When I put it back together I didn't bother trying to block it because I figured whatever I used would burn though again anyways, or be too thick and interfere with the intake sealing right.

The best way I would think would be to weld up the crossover itself in the intake as said above.

A friend told me he'd pack the head side with furnace cement.

Haven't read that yet but you do bring up a good point , if he is using the stock choke stove then he'll need the heated passage or it's going to cause issues with the choke opening properly/fully ???

choke? race cars dont have chokes...

this car hasn't had a choke for years. it wasnt there when i bought it in 86 either. The reason I want to block the crossover is because I can hear gas bubbling in the fuel bowls after I shut it off. I am also going to install the valley tray I just ordered (I used to have one and that kept the intake nice and cool).

Since I dont need the chock well, and the paint is starting to blacken near the heads at the crossover, I figured it wouldnt hurt to block em.

That's the funniest retort I've seen in a while, even more so considering the guy's name is Bill MeLater.

Parts I seek: driver doorpanel, 65 Sport Fury, prefer black, needs to be 7-8 on 10 scale, might buy set 16" x 6" Dodge truck wheel(s), from early 70s?, takes 9" dogdish - need for a research job so cheaper is better. 69-73 C-body caliper brackets and/or splashields Send a PM.

I can't really take credit for the name either, got it from all those pesky subscription inserts the magazines have. Take a look they all have it.

Lessee. Crudely cast, non-precision blocks - yeah I tried the Felpro deal ; they burned thru.

I just stuffed aluminum foil balls "down thar" - these engines aren't finicky Lamborghinis after all.

Works swell.

There is a Mopar kit that has the intake gaskets with a metal block off plate for each side. Part#P4286569 I have used it with no problems so far.

I filled the crossover on my Edelbrock intake with JB weld. Been working for over 6 years now.

Simply mix up enough to fill the hole, pour it in, tape off the face of the ontake and set the intake so that the tape in down, gravity does the rest. If you find you didn't quite mix up enough it's easy to add more later.
