Hey gang..

With the body of my Superbird off to the paint shop, I'm starting to restore/rebuild components. Here I have, luckily, the original master cylinder !!! In the event the bore of it is pitted too much and I can't rebuild it via my garage, is there any services you all have used with good results and are happy with? I was planning on sending my booster to BoosterDeweys. I don't see from their page that they rebuild MC's.

Also, any place to get the tag that's sometimes on the MC on the cap clip?

Thanks..

Brake and Equipment Warehouse in Minneapolis is great for rebuilding master cylinders. They can sleeve it if your bore is pitted.
As for the tag, Bill Rolik recently was researching tags that were found on early 70's master cylinders with a goal of reproducing them. I don't know if he had any thoughts about reproducing the similar date code tags found on some disc brake master cylinders in the late 60's. Worth checking with him. Other than him, I don't know anyone who makes them or has talked of making them.
At some point Bendix stopped putting the date codes on tags and stamped them into the side of the casting instead. I don't know when this change took place, my educated guess is early to mid '69. I suspect by the time Superbirds were being built, the master cylinders didn't have a tag. I have the original master cylinder off my November 69 built Challenger which is stamped with an October date code. I used to have an October 69 stamped hemi disc cylinder also. I've never seen a date code tag on a '70 Mopar, which doesn't mean it never happened, but still I doubt they were still used at all by the time in '69 that production started for the '70 model year.
Your MC looks sort of pitted from the pictures, but I'd check the left side of the casting to see if you can see any remnants of a date code stamped into it.

If all is lost on saving your original, sometimes originals pop up in FENCO's rebuilt stock under #M1475

Duralast also has a NEW replacement, no casting numbers though, but correct in shape/appearance, again under pn# 1475

I thought MC tags didn't start until 1971

The tags you are thinking of didn't start until 1971. Those being the tags that have the last 4 numbers of the part number and may say PWER etc.
On original disc brake master cylinders on 68s and 69's I've seen, there was a similar tag hanging from the bale wire, that just has a date code. The drum brake MCs had date codes stamped in them, not sure why they put date codes on a tag on disc brake MCs, but I'm sure they had a reason?
There's a picture of one of these date code tags in my master cylinder article in the April 2005 Mopar Action.

With the seals and pistons removed get a gallon of Evap-O-Rust and let it soak for 24-48 hours, you will be amazed at how clean it will come out, it will remove the rust and depending on how long it soaks it will also remove or soften any remaining paint, it won't hurt the metal and all of the stampings (if any) will be easy to read. In the past I've used White Post Restorations http://www.whitepost.com/brake.html for a M/C brass sleeve, they can restore it all the way or just overbore and press in a brass sleeve bringing it back to original size, keep in mind they advertise as part of their restoration service they will glassbead, which you may not want depending on your level of restoration.

Also just noticed on White Post's website they also rebuild boosters so that might be another option for you.

An article I read years ago had White Post as being expensive and B&E equipment using a stainless sleeve at a better price with better service..

There have been a few members here over the years complaining about White Posts work restoring the 2229171 casting number E body master cylinders. Apparently they use the wrong kit when rebuilding them and the MC won't work afterwards. And when the members called White Post to complain, the guy they dealt with on the phone was a real azz.
I don't know how they do with the B body MCs, but from what I've heard about their work and attitude on the other ones, I wouldn't trust them.
I've used Brake and Equipment many times and have been really happy with their work. I've had a master cylinder they sleeved for me on my Challenger convertible for maybe 8 years if not more which is still working perfectly.
I just had them rebuild a couple calipers for my T/A project for me and I didn't think they were especially cheap, it was around $180 with shipping, but I trust their work 100%.

I had a customer use Whitepost and it was a mess, he sent MC and Booster, neither worked right and "restoration" was poor. He had to send the booster out again to Brake Booster Dewey and it was perfect, found a nice NOS master later too since his couldn't be saved.

Run away....Run Far Far Away. I think at one time he may have been OK, but a lot of negatives lately.

I was gonna post this, he is even from Texas too, right? Hah. Maybe I'll get a video of his said antics this weekend up at the nationals. Ask him if he wants help setting up a website.

But really if I remember, I'll grab some biz cards and or pictures of anybody with that service up at the Nationals. Then you can research from there.

No reason to go anywhere else but Brake and Equipment Warehouse in Minneapolis . Great people to work with and very reasonable for what you get. 612-378-3141. Ask for Brad. He does the Master Cylinders.

I have heard excellent reviews for them as well.
