stock iron or 6pak. you could use a taller 4bbl intake if you cut down the air cleaner base.

I use a Holley Street Dominator wit a 1 inch wood spacer. I have cheated a bit by spacing the K-member down about 1/2 inch. up

With what air filter assembly.

ANYTHING much taller than the stock cast iron intake, with the factory 440 air cleaner assembly, is going to potentially hit the hood.

No doubt that is why all the A-12 cars got a fiberglass hood eh?

I have read in the past a steet dominator has worked, I have the original oval 440 base which I have read is a bit lower than the 383 base since the RB is ~.700 taller?

Really don't want to go with the lift off hood, but it sure would open up options.

the 6pak air cleaner base for the ramcharger hood has a dropped base, about 1". the a12 air cleaner assembly is not a drop base and is an entirely different concept. the 4bbl air cleaner bases, 383 or 440, are raised above the carb air horn and this is what minimizes hood clearance.

A Six pack intake is TALL. if you look at the assembly you will notice it has a drop base. I'd think anything as tall would work as long as you have a drop base. I can tell you a Performer RPM w/ a 1/2 space puts the car throat right up on the hood. What is your application? What is the motor build?

No, the the A12 cars did not get the fiberglass hood because of the height of the 6pk.

A 6pk setup fits fine under the ramcharger hood with the air cleaner that was used on the 1970 and 71 6pk cars. I had that setup on my 69 Road Runner with the factory air grabber setup.

You need to be VERY careful when using anything NOT FACTORY STOCK HEIGHT under the factory hoods. There is/was a member, NASBackyard, that had/has a 69 Roadrunner that he put a 440 in and wanted to run an Alum 4bbl. manifold. I suggested to him than he could use the Ebrock CH4B as it was an NHRA allowed replacement manifold in Stock Class. He put it on with an unmodified 440 oval air cleaner assembly and it dimpled his hood from the under side. Come to find out the CH4B carb pad is about a 1/2"ish taller than the stock iron intake.

Unless someone has ACTUALLY used the Street Dominator, on a 440, in a ramcharger hood equipped car like you own, with a factory unmodified 440 spec oval air cleaner, you should NOT take their word as gospel ...

i just gave my 69 r/t the alum foil test. this car has the original carb, intake, air cleaner assembly. also the original motor mount brackets and isolaters so there may be some sag. looks like i might be close to 1/2" from hood/ramcharger assembly. i would think that some clearance would have to be figured in due to engine movement. 1/2" clearance seems to work good with what i have but i'd suspect 1/4" clearance would probably be a minimum.

My friend that I built a 383 for has an alum dual plane on his 383 , I think it's a Weiand ??, with the 383 spec oval air cleaner and I noticed a little rub mark on the top of the air claner , he has no air grabber assembly in it . I looked at the hood and I couldn't really see a mark but he did have a hood pad on it at one point?. Anyway he has a Holley on it and is running a 1/2" carb spacer under it, which I didn't remember being there when I worked on it last year, and with the hood closed I was able to flex the metal slightly with my hand and feel it hit the top of the air cleaner ...

That is way to close, car is a 4 speed and if it breaks a mount the air cleaner is going to hit the hood.

Yup '69 R/T here.

It had the cast iron manifold last time it was on the road.

Yes sir it is one o' them "I'm gonna fix it someday" ones that would never be for sale.

Almost 32 years later Ima gonna fix it!

2nd owner 80,000 mile car that has never been titled more than 25 miles from the original selling dealer.

I ain't restoring it,,,,,,more of a day two or resto mod deal.

I sold a factory 440 4V intake manifold to a member here a couple years ago b/c of this very reason. He couldn't find an aftermarket intake that would work w/ the factory air grabber/ramcharger setup w/o modifying the crap out of the air cleaner base.

Also remember that if someone tells you an Edelbrock Performer (or whatever manifold) fit the ramcharger setup on their 383, doesn't mean the equivalent manifold will work on your 440. The 440 is taller due to the raised deck height of the block.

Interesting topic. On my 69 440 air grabber I have black rub marks on the top of the air cleaner lid towards the back, factory carb intake ect.

What would cause this ? I did have a bad motor mount which I replaced, maybe this caused this, do some mounts make the motor sit higher ?
Also I have heard some of the older repo air grabber seals were made a bit to short in length which will cause this.

Thoughts please ?

I have read that the 440 base was lower than the 383 for just this reason? (RBs taller height)
Street dominator seems to be about the lowest still available at this time. The old Edelbrock dm4b or sumthin' like that was said to be pretty low?

I have a street dom on my shopping list, if it is for sure too high I will do sum more research.

There was a thread on here a while back about this same issue. The Edelbrock Performer is considered the closest to stock of the aftermarket manifolds available...and it is something like 3/4" taller than stock.
The old Mopar M1 dual plane was just an aluminum copy of the '69-'70 HP manifold. No power increase, but saves a bunch of weight.

The Edelbrock DP4B (383) and CH4B (440) are the next step up from the Performer. Again, slightly taller than stock, but also slightly larger runners for a little more power.

I think the Holley SD will be way too tall to use w/o some serious modifications to the air cleaner. If you can get it to work, that's great b/c it is an awesome manifold. It is old, but it works GREAT.
The Holley SD and the Edelbrock Performer RPM both work great, but the RPM is even taller than the SD.

Perhaps I need to look at motor mounts for the extra clearance?

I will probably buy the SD and make it work (because that is what we do eh?)
