While changing a old -8 hose out yesterday I noticed the I.D. of a old fitting was small, so I took a minute to compare it to a few others I had.
I thought this was interesting.

Why I recommend Aeroquip. XRP is a true aircraft cutter style end which some people don't like to work with, even though it is probably a better design and is more expensive. Summit? Who knows where that comes from. And the old Russell stuff was awful. No clue what the current stuff looks like. Earl's makes nice stuff and offers both styles, but I don't have any here to measure.
Interesting that I haven't been able to find any of these specs in anyone's information online.

I have been using Mostly XRP for years now.
Could someone measure the I.D. of other brands (Earls, Fragola, etc) just for reference?

XRP is top shelf. They just aren't available at the cut rate mail order giants. Probably a reason or 2 for that.

I'm under the impression that 8AN should have a minimum I.D. of .500 through out the system, not smaller AN, Army Navy, standards are based on .0625 increments, 8 times .0625 equals .500 inch, correct?

My technical information says:
-8AN metal tubing outside OD - 1/2" -8AN hose ID - .438" -10AN hose ID - .562"
If you are referencing mil-spec or AN hardware - bolts, screws, etc. - then yes, -8 is 1/2", -6 is 3/8", etc.

I have some Fragola stuff to as we just redid the Drasgter with all their stuff not long ago. Just cannot find an spare -8 fittings.

I'm starting to see that if you really want a certain size on the American stuff you better go up one more size... between the fitting it screws onto and the fitting itself we choke ours pretty good

A very short section of 3/8" diameter in a 1/2" diameter line does very little to impede flow. It's all about head loss.
Fortunately for us who live in this universe, fluid will speed up through the narrow sections and slow down through the fatter sections. It's NOT like toothpaste, where once it goes through a smaller hole it remains that diameter.
Fluid dynamics is not intuitive.
R. So putting a nozzle on the end of my water garden hose will allow me to fill my car wash bucket just as fast as an open hose? We are talking non compressible fluids, correct?

Reality check, that half the population is smarter then 50% of the people and it's a constantly contested fact.

My Earls #8 measures .375-.377 id............. My opinion is the fitting they screw onto is the choke point... I always drill them open a small amount but I know its not a 3/8 bit.... I havent measure the ID of the male fittings

R. You just turned it into a 3/8 hose unless you increase the pressure to increase flow
