When the top fuelers back up after the burn out
you see a crew guy push a lever down on the side
of the body.. is that a vent for the tank or what

Don't know for sure on the fuelers but on a friend's Top Alcohol car, that lever controls an accelerator pedal stop to limit the throttle during burnout.
