My 2001 ram truck trans is acting weird. It will need to wind way up to shift as if it is floored, but it is not. it will also down shift when coming to a stop. The only code is unrelated to the issue that Iam having?? Any ideas?? Thanks

Throttle valve cable adjustment is the first thing to look at.

A little play or a little tight in either direction makes a significant difference in shifting.

Okay, the next two is brake-switch and the solonoid pack.

Regarding the brake-switch, need to clarify your comment:

" it will also down shift when coming to a stop", which is normal; or, did you mean to say it will not downshift at a stop?

Sorry for not being more clear. When coming to a stop the trans is down shifting and racing the engine up. like you are manually down shifting. Thanks for your help.

My 1000 miles arm chair diag would be governor Solonoid and sensor. If I was there I would throw a scanner (not a code reader they are almost useless) and watch the governor actual and desired readings.

Mine acted that way (at least partially) when I broke off the tailshaft speed sensor. It had to rev way up to shift, but I don't remember how it acted when it downshifted. At least take a look at the transmission tailshaft on the driver's side and make sure all the harnesses are hooked up. It's a plastic housing. Mine was actually broken off...

Yeah Fat_Mike, we sure been here before huh? wink

Thanks for clarifying Flyman, yes, try the vehicle speed sensor. It's toward the back of the trans on the Driver-side, plastic housing if I remember right. You will get soaked with ATF when you pull it out. There's a trick to not get drenched but I'm not going to suggest it.

It has like a magnet of some sort on the tip and metal bits can hang on there and mess up the signal. So, you can first try cleaning it real good and re-install and go for a drive. If that doesn't improve it buy a new one (from the dealer, not the aftermarket garbage) and try again.

Hopefully, that's the cheap way out.

After that, it gets more expensive and things have to come apart (solonoid pack). So, thanks for these super-reliable overdrive transmissions "Old Chrysler". down

What did you lube it with (or what is recommended)? Kinda wondering if this is common, and if I should throw some lube on mine as a preventative measure. My truck spends a lot of time on dirt roads during the Winter months.
