My 71 Charger 383 distributor has this box thing on the side with two wires that plug into the harness.

The new points distributor I bought doesn't have this box.

#1 - What is it?
#2 - Is it okay to just unplug it and use the new distributor without?
#3 - If it is okay, do I need to do anything to the wires in the harness it was plugged to?

it a box that when triggered either added or retarded a certain amt of timing (likely for emissions purposes). iirc it retarded. You do not need nor want it. Keep it tho as a restoration guy somewhere down the line may want it. install your dist & dial in the subsystems in order: initial/total/springs/vac adv (if used & I would). just run the black wire to the coil neg pri terminal and cut the (2) wires out you mentioned or tape em off whichever works for you

Even 71 440 six-packs have that box

You are right as I believe that one retarded the timing at idle some. Mopar also had a setup for emissions that advanced the timing only when cranking the eng but I think it was a little smaller then that is. Ron

RapidRobert, Morty426, 383man -
Thank you all for your input and education! I'll move forward now and archive the original distributor and install the new one.

Thanks again!

Ron
