I have a friend's 71 Challenger in my shop that I am trying to round up all the parts to install the rear bumper. The car was just painted and dropped off for me to assemble, I have never worked on a 71 before just several 70 challengers,On a 70 it takes a bumper filler strip. I did not take the car apart and I don't have the tail light bezel to look at right now, I ask my friend if the bezel had this filler strip built into it or did I need the strip like 70. He said he didn't khow and the painter had it and it was being redone. So my question is the bumper filler made on the tail light bezel or is it like the 70 a metal strip mounter under tail light panel.

There is no separate filler strip on a '71. The taillight bezel is pretty thick and takes up a lot of that gap.

Do make sure that you have the right brackets (70 and 71 are the same) as later models did mount the bumper further from the body, and had their own rubber filler strips.

That's not correct. That's a 70 only part.

As mentioned the 71 has NO filler strip, the 2pc rear tail light cover extends under the bumper, don't install the bumper if the tail lights/rear facia panel are not installed, as you need to install these first, bumper last...

Also is your friends car an R/T or base model, restoring original/custom?, as there's some black out to perform if it's R/T optioned, best to do that now before assy, is the 2pc tail fascia panel argent or black, rubber bumper equipped cars also dictate a black out on the upper bumper surface, as well as black out striping on the trunk/qtr chrome trim pcs

Car is standard convertible, The AMD advertising about the bumper filler strip being for 70 - 72 is what got me wondering if it took the strip. Not having the tail light cover here I was not sure. I did not take the car a part so I wanted all parts here before I start. I like to start at rear and go forward and the owner has no idea what is what on the car.All he knows is when he took it apart ten years ago to be painted it was not hard to do. But he did not mark anything because he was going to be putting back together soon.So he would remember how it came apart, He did not count on having to pay someone to replace 80% of the car because of rust, rockers, frame rails, ect, ect, it was his high school car and he loved driving it on the beach of Daytona with the top down, while salt just ate away at the bottom. The things we did in our youth. He was just going pay some one about 1500.00 for paint job and put it back together. He should have consulted a paint and body guy first. It was quite a shock to him to find out what it was going to cost to repair the car. But to his credit he waited and saved up to have the car done. Soon he will back on the beach. (I don't think so)
