you will pick up about 1/2 point compression, maybe a little more doing only the Mag head swap.

no you won't if it's a 2bbl...OEM magnums usually run in the 63cc chamber range, the stock 302 heads usually run in the 58-63cc range, so your compression won't change dramatically, adn might decrease slightly..

My bad. I was comparing the Mag compression against an old open chamber 318 head, not against a closed chamber 302 head(not sure what year they started with the 302's). I agree, compression between a Mag head and a 302 head would be minimal.

That's what I was thinking as well, being that both 318s I have are completely dead stock (one even has its Lean Burn still) My 78 Fury has '163 heads and not sure which heads my '83 P/U has but I'm thinking they are the exact same ones on there too. Both are still 2 barrel motors (not for long!)
CR wise, yeah; the 302s will be about the same as the Magnum heads; I seem to remember seeing they were rated at like 8.9-9.0:1 but if you run stock Magnum rocker gear you will pick up a bit in rocker ratio which will help things even if onlt a little;
also I'm thinking an LA 318 with Mag heads will be real close CR wise and performance wise to a stock Mag 318.especially if both are running the same intake and carb.

I would go for the magnum heads... actually the EQ heads.
With a 2.03 intake valve and porting they got flow numbers of 275/int -- 229ex at .600 lift........
that is pretty decent for some cheap cast iron heads.... TBF
