I am getting ready to install my original Holley 6193 carb on the motor (383), and was wondering if there was a carb spacer or special gasket that was used.

When I got the car it had an aftermarket 750 Holley installed, and a stack of gaskets.

I wanted to make sure I get the bubble height correct.

Pics would be great if anybody has some.

Thanks

Been awhile with 383 Shaker cars , I know you need the carb spacer, IIRC it's 3/4" thick

here's some pics of a 383 set up and the parts needed, some of the pics are from Terry (Mccannix) IIRC, I'm sure he'll have some more pics/info if he sees this thread

Here's a few more....make sure you have a 383 shaker base as they are different than the 340/440 4bbl base, IIRC the 340/440 neck is 1 1/2" tall and the 383 is 2" deep

I'm not 100% sure on the carb gasket but you may be correct at 3/4".

Thanks for the pics guys. I do have the correct 383 base, but I am also missing the support rod you guys showed.

I will post a pic of the spacer that was under the carb when I bought the car.

Does anybody have some good pics of the wiring of the idle solenoid and the relay on the distributor?

Thanks,

The best I can do is some 1970 factory lit, take it with a grain of salt as engineering photos and production may change

This is what was on my car when I got it. I am not sure if this is the OEM spacer or not. I have never seen an original 4 BBL shaker spacer.

Does this look like an OEM piece?

On close inspection it does look bonded together really well.

The proverbial "unicorn" of Shaker parts!!!! I'd like to see/have a pic for my files as well, last one I laid my eyes on was on Steven Seigel's 1971 GY3 383 Shaker Cuda convertible...where's the plethora of Shaker gurus when you need them smile

Technically not a shaker part but a carb/intake part.
As stated above Holley HLY-108-18 should be the gasket you need.

Terry, wouldn't there be 2 gaskets required?, one under the carb, and one under the spacer?..same gasket?, or alternate PN?

That's what I was thinking. I have not seen any pics of an original spacer. Possible unicorn...?

I cant comment because I have never had the opportunity to look close at an original 383 shaker carb, etc with the system removed

pretty sure the 340 and 383 base plates are 3/8" in height diff. just traded with mike ross .. he was careful to be sure it was in fact a 340 plate I had ... the adapter looks like it is about 3/8" to me ? just a thought ..

When you say "base plates", I'll assume you mean the actual Shaker base/carb plate", and the adapter you saw? did you have it, or Mike Ross?

here's the Shaker base chart

Chris from Ny who used to make these rods sold his last one two years ago and has no plans to make more.
Try Tommy Chryco who advertises and contributes here.
He was talking about manufacturing a run of these.

Very interesting information. I have a 383 base and never knew what the front hole was for.

That's awesome! I never could get a hold of the guy that made the 1st run of reproductions.

You have to wonder how rare of a part the factory original support rods are? I have never seen a factory original one on a car or at a swap meet.

The only original support I have seen was broken off in the block, bet that was common.

Scott at Harms Auto has the correct base spacer, which is not the 108-18 that Terry mentions. It is an aluminum one that was on all cars with a Holley 4bbl, in 1970 and 1971. It would have come with an asbestos top and bottom, which are not on Scott's spacer, as that type of material is no longer available. But he does have other suggestions for something comparable that would work the same as the asbestos.
