Here's the situation. I'm running a B lowdeck with Ed heads and AC. The current alternator is a Chrysler/Powermaster rated 75A running and 50A idle. It feeds through a 6 guage wire bypassing the bulkhead connector. With a big A1000 electric fuel pump, electronics and AC it isn't quite enough. With lights on it discharges at idle and it barely keeps up with AC and brights on going down the road at night... voltage drops to +/-12.5 V. I wouldn't expect life to be very long when it has to run that hard.

I would use the Andy F/Denso kit except I'm not sure it would work. The alternator bracket for AC cars has a back brace to a motor mount ear plus I need a double pulley.

I tried a 140A Powermaster/Delco but it wouldn't fit in front of the head - the case and output stud hit. I called Powermaster and they said no go with a BB/Ed head.

I could get the monster 100A Chrysler unit from my core engine rebuilt but I'd probably need bigger T bars to carry the weight plus they're not generally stocked at autoparts stores in case I get in trouble on the road.

Suggestions?

certainly, the huge old 100amp job that came out from the 70's would work well, but I think the best one would be the 100amp unit that was used on late 80's TBI trucks. Its a small denso job with a dual V-belt pulley. Try one for a 1989 1/2 ton truck with the TBI 318.

Looks like this

It was also mounted on the same bracket as the bigger 100amp unit.

This company offers a 105 amp kit for mopar square back alternators.

Havent tried it myself yet, but I am thinking about that one or the 85 amp.

I used to care but....... things have changed

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll look for a core from a pickup for fit-up. I've heard the "soup up" kits for the standard Chrysler alternator don't help at idle. Any truth to this?

Thats what I've heard too, in fact their output at low RPMS (below about 1200) may even be less than the stockers.

Kinda like camshafts!

But others will know for sure
