I have a customer who wants to use a Pertronix Flame thrower distributor with the built in ECU , this motor is in a street cruiser which will never see above 5000 RPM so I need to know which coils are good with this unit and which ones aren't Thanks in advance for your help, comments and suggestions

I think you use Pertronix's advice, on this link: http://www.pertronix.com/prod/ig/flame/coils/chart.aspxLooks like a 1.5 ohm 40,000 volt coil would be the one. If the coil is mounted vertically up, then oil filled is okay. If the coil needs to be mounted sideways on in another position I'd use the epoxy filled one. R.

The (Pertronix) epoxy filled ones are made in China and the oil filled are made in Mexico. Make of that what you will but I just smoked a new epoxy coil this past year. Car had probably 200 miles on it. It could be a freak thing, but I'm hearing more of the same everyday. See TJP's post above.

Dog is that the same one you priorly mentioned that would be a good JY score? I'm assuming it ain't an E coil (its too cheap & we ain't that lucky)! EDIT is it American made?

I called Pertronics today and went over the coil choices with one of thier techs, his recomendation was to use any 12V ignition coil that had .6 ohms or more and to not reduce the input voltage to the coil through a resitor. He said to not use a very low impedance, .59 ohms or less, coil Thanks to all of you for your help on this Time to get the Fluke VOM meter and check coils for resiatnce readings

Cab; (1) is impedance the same as ohms and (2) was that his across the board (coil) recommendation for all (3) P systems (I II III)?

Impedance is the same as Ohms in a DC circuit but impedance is used in AC circuits as a measurement of resitance to loading and unloading those circuits, according to my old Webster dictionary any ways I was told by one of MSD engineers it was the measuremnt they used in measuring the build up of the charging and discharging thier coils and inside the circuits of their multi spark boxes. MHO is the term used to measure conductance, I'm not sure what sign is used to measure impedance As far as his recomendations we only talked about the Flame Thrower distributor, not a particular version of it. I have some of the special coils Accel and Mallory coils used only for racing that have a different ratio of winding in them compared to a stock type coil, he said DO NOT use them
