Play with this, just un-click the "go to tire results" check box before hitting the calculate button:

https://tiresize.com/calculator/

Essentially the first number is the width of the tires in MM. The second number is the ratio of sidewall height to width. So for example a 275/60R15 tire would have a 275mm width, sidewall would be 275mm x 0.6. Thus, comparing those two numbers gives you an idea of the height and width of a tire.

The difference between those two tires (assuming they are both the same rim size) would be 21/32" (16.5mm) taller sidewall on the "225" (thats just over 5/8") over all height difference of 1 19/64" (33mm) which is just over 1 1/4" The difference in width would be 25/64" (10mm) just a hair over 3/8" about 3 MPH difference in speedo reading between the two

use these differences as a guide only. the math calculations are correct, however the differences between tire manufacturers of the same tire sizes can be vastly [up to 1/2" or more] different. take two tires from say, good year and firestone, in identical sizes as marked on the sidewall. mount them on the same size wheel, inflate to the same psi. then measure width, diameter, and circumference. you will be surprised at the differences. or just put them back to back and see the different width and height without measuring anything. one of the main reasons newer 4WD and AWD vehicles say to replace all 4 tires at the same time instead of just the one or two you need to replace due to wear. just personal experiences and observations over a 50 year span.

Agreed! :agree: That is the theoretical size according to the aspect ratio. I wouldn't mix and match any tires on my newer AWD or the rear of our old behemoths!

225/70 is taller and skinnier.235/60 is shorter and wider.
