I'm restoring an AAR Cuda and wanted to know if all AAR master cylinders were painted, not painted, or could be both. I have a Bendix master cylinder and booster.

The master cylinder, lid, bail, booster & booster valve were all painted as an assembly.

Were they painted gloss black or was it gloss with a percentage of flattener added?

Can I get a little more information on this issue? I understand the master cylinder was painted black (1970 AAR Bendix) and it would seem like it would have to be a very "hard" gloss paint to stand up to the DOT3 brake fluid but I don't know that for sure. Can anyone confirm that the paint used was "Gloss" and what type of paint would someone suggest with the necessary durability for this application (stand up to the DOT3 brake fluid?

Thanks,

They didn't paint anything to stand up to fluids. They didn't care - lol. I like to paint them (as a complete assy) anywhere from 12-15% flattened.

Maxwellwedge,I was hoping there was a majic bullet, I am restoring this car as show car and would like a way of not having the black paint "lift" a couple of weeks after finishing the project. Thanks

I understand - I use silicone brake fluid in everything these days.

Maxwellwedge, makes sense. Whitepost Restorations did the rebuild on my Master Cylinder and they included a note upon shipping it back to me saying do NOT USE synthetic brake fluid because it will deteriorate the rubber parts in the brake system. Ever heard of that?

Might be whatever seals and components Whitepost is using that might have a reaction...Never had deterioration from DOT5 in any system I've used it in..

Never had a problem either.....I think I remember reading that all newer DOT approved brake fluid has to be backwards compatible with all previous ones.....maybe it was in an Ehrenberg article.
