Which are better? And how do you tell the difference with them still on the block?

Between the 2, I prefer the 915's for their closed chambers.

If you are going with a 'quench' motor and flat tops then the 915's (closed chamber) are the way to go. If the heads are on the block just pull a valve cover off. The last 3 numbers of the casting number will tell you what the heads are (ie ----915 or ----906, etc).

906's cost $60-100 a pair. 915's several hundred a pair & are fairly hard to come by as it was (1)year only(1967) whereas 906's ~ 3 years. If you want a quench motor(smart move) & dont want to step up to one of the alum heads then go with a 915 with the right piston/head gasket.

But if your gonna pay $250-300+ for a set of core heads..Then 400-500+ to rebuilt them...Your well along in buying a set of Stealth heads..

Ok, I have to ask. What is quench and can you put 915s on a smogger engine to get the compression up, or are you changing the quench area? If I put 915s on a 10 to 1 compression motor, won't it ping from to high of compression?

I was not too sure of this either, but the guys here on the forum explained it to me and this article seems like it hits it right on the head.
Not to hijack, but wouldnt all BB and RB's be considered non-quench motors? What would be the advantage? Lower CR? Emission control?

67 & earlier BB had closed chamber heads & could be built as quench engines...Chrysler & GM both went to open chamber heads because it was believed they allowed better combustion but that hasn't shown to be the case, the quench engine offers many advantages...

My thinking exactly. You'll get the bigger valves, better flow and quench not to mention less weight and the ability to run about 1 point higher compression ratio.
