I'm about to mate my Trans with the 440 in my 69 A12 4 speed. Was the original bell housing "cast" color, like the Trans, or painted street hemi orange or a blend or something different?
Also, what about the dust cover / inspection plate?
Thanks

But only partically I believe. Here is my AAR to show the pattern, they were bolted to the engine less trans when the engine was painted and they got paint where they got in the way, same with exhaust manifolds.

Aluminum doesn't rust (SB). I've never seen an original with complete coverage but I have seen them vary and admittedly, I cant say that I have seen an original A-12 bellhousing before restoration. Was the possess different for them than the rest of the 440s?? I have a before picture of mine I will be glad to e-mail to show the coverage but it's too big to post. Is your's an unaltered A12? Pictures?

This has been covered before; common consensus is it depended on the worker with the paint gun in his hand.

Original a12 bellhousing and paint. I bought a transmission and bell housing combo a few years ago and a moparts member confirmed the #'s were from an A12 Runner. Sold the trans, but kept the housing. Been in storage for 25 years or so.

Original a12 bellhousing and paint. I bought a transmission and bell housing combo a few years ago and a moparts member confirmed the #'s were from an A12 Runner. Sold the trans, but kept the housing. Been in storage for 25 years or so. It's pretty well painted even around the bolt holes, bottom flange and area around the clutch fork opening. I'm surprised that the dust cover doesn't have more paint but the parts have been in storage for 25 yrs. I always paint mine nicely when I do a motor. The original parts were not primered and if your parts have bare primer showing, it will look bad and unpainted bare metal will develop surface rust. There is really no down side to painting the bell housing and dust cover completely.
