This is getting crazy, all these new cars. Its very interesting to see all the GM racers building cars: Rodger Brodgon, Joey Wilkes, Did someone mention Arnie Martel?,Warfish already showed he can do it,I thought I read awhile back that Jeff Taylor was building one also. The Barnetts can do it,remember Steve Bagwells A car from years ago. The more the merrier!!!

I was around when the 68 cars came out (older than dirt) - but someone explain to me, why spend all that money - probably at least $300k, to race for what $5,000. ? Look at the cars and transporters - does this make sense ?

The payout must be more then that at most races. English Town had a $10,000 pay out at the Atlantic nationals last year didnt they ?

to answer your question,, why spend money to try to win/compete.. because we/they want to.. dont be negative if guys want to keep pushing the envelope.

and it definitely wont be pancake unless he gets a new engine builder, or ray picks up alot!

Whoa! Easy there Jeff. At least use lubrication back there. Don't count us out that quick. Pancake isn't like most guys. He is a real team player and tries his best at all times. AS A TEAM. He doesn't just sit around and complain about other guys going fast. And no he doesn't get all of the best stuff like everybody thinks. He's just that much better at tuning a car. Like I said, he works at it. And that's what it takes.

Bartons Dart has run 8.60's and Holton car along with the Warfish have run 8.50's. Right now a Dart holds the record and I honestly have to look to remember who it is and what the et is. I think its in the 8.60's right now. Bucky Hess showed some power lately with his Joe Clark Hemi but I still think a Holten powered car will dip in the 8.40's if the air is right at Mission this year. Ron

But what really saddens me - is SS/A is so far from what it started as - guess I am just old and liked the old days - expensive then but at least close to what came out of the factory - today ? Oh, I really do enjoy watching them but has it gotten out of hand ? I think so. And then after the "Shootout" it becomes a bracket race against cars they NEVER made - RW drive Cobalt with V8 and sheet metal manifolds? And then, as we all fear - the "sportsman" racer will be gone - replaced by a single day or maybe a two day event featuring TF-FC-and maybe P/S (bubble cars) -- our sport is going away and no one can stop the "progress". Ok - enough of my soap box - thanks for reading this, please don't throw me under the bus

I say no cars will go 8.40s but will go very low 8.50s and I say it will be a Phil Mandella race car with Holton power, possibly with Modern Cylinder heads. It may even be a Dart!!! Whoa!!
Alright maybe someone may go 8.49 but I doubt it.

Stop it please. You're depressing me. This class is as real as it's going to get. Where else can you go and see this many cars race and have any tech officials that mean anything? If anything this class is gonna have more rules tacked on before you know it. It's so competitive that everybody is pushing every rule there is in the book. The question is, how much will NHRA let the racers get away with before they finally do something? For example, hood scoops. Just give us a damn measurement already.

And by the way, bracket racing IS actually fun when you are going rounds with a reliable consistant car.

The question is, how much will NHRA let the racers get away with before they finally do something?" SO TRUE - my point exactly! But setting rules and hiring competent tech officals that will ENFORCE the rules is expensive - take away from the bottom line!

Most of those 8:50 passes are altitude adjusted runs.If the runs are not factored, the fast runs will still be in the 8:50's.

I think these guys are trying to save sportman racing,If more would go to heads up racing all fans would watch just like they do for the hemi shootout cars,This kind of racing makes sense to everybody, its not the go stop go racing of some other classes. And this is the way drag racing should be. As far as the haulers look at all sportman racers. And they win nothing, and charlie westcott gave his wining check to the USO if you get the mar 2006 drag racing action magazine there is a write up to this fact. Just my

Yep I think its great to see the baddest sportsman SS door slammer cars ever to get this attention. This is what I want to see. This and any nostalgic door slammer racing is what I grew up with and love. I also saw these cars when they cam out in 68 (I was 12) and I was already into Mopars and drag racing. I dont care for the Super class of delay boxes and throttle stops but I dont mind watching bracket racing of cars I can identify what they are. I also enjoy the FAST and Pure Stock cars. I hate to see NHRA giving the sportsman guys and girls the bum rap as thats what I like so its good to see so much competition going on in the SS/AH class and I look forward to watching them race this year. I know many are going after the record and bragging rights but that makes for strong competition. Ron
