a poly 318 would make you way cooler on cruise night!!!

They ARE a cool engine but .... parts are ruff to get PLUS they are a bigger, heavier and wider engine than a 318/340/360.

Some parts are a bit harder to locate but all parts are available. Bigger? same short block different style head that only looks bigger; heavier? maybe 30lbs due to the heads and intake; wider? looks are deceiving.
The 62-66 short block is essentially the same as post 66. And yes, you can use the stroker cranks in them!!
These engines are bullet proof. Many times they are very cheap if not free just because they look different.

.

Ummm...no. The Poly block is wider than the LA block. Otherwise there would be nothing to stop you from bolting a set of LA heads on and slide in an LA cam, and go. Bolt a set of LA heads to a poly 318 and try to bolt the LA intake on...you'll find it doesn't come anywhere near bolting up to the heads. While the cranks will interchange, and the rods, and a few other odds and ends, that's where it ends. They don't call them "Y" blocks for nothing.

The Y-block is a Ford engine.

Also, per Allpar.com:

Quote:

The A engine was produced from 1955 through 1966. The LA, introduced in 1964, had the same basic design but was very heavily modified. The lightweight ("L" A) or thin-wall casting and heads saved around 50 pounds; the wedge-shaped combustion chamber was much smaller than the A engines’ poly heads, greatly reducing the size and allowing the first LA engine (273 V8) to fit into the small Valiant. The LA's valves were simpler too, saving money and size. The 273 ended up being only fifty pounds heavier than the 225-cid slant six.

Yeah, I know that there is an official "Y" block made by Ford. However, more than one Mopar rag back in the 80's, as well as one of my old Mopar Engines books referred to them as Y block due to the wider spread of the V. That's pretty much how they look bare. Regardless, the fact remains that the block IS different, and NOT interchangeable or substitutable for an LA piece.

By that definition then the B/RB engines are also "Y-blocks" as well because of the location of the crank up in the block, up and away from the oil pan mounting rails.

We have totally hijacked this thread....

Yes, big block Mopars are Y-blocks. Doesn't have anything to do with the spread of the V (which is 90 degrees for any even-fire V-8). Has to do with the block extending below the centerline of the crank (i.e., the lower leg of the "Y"). A poly 318 block ends at the crank centerline, just like a wedge 318.

As for swapping LA heads onto an A engine, I've never done it myself, but apparently some have:

https://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/show...p;vc=1&nt=2

Also, poly 318 heads flow better than 318 wedge heads:

(Be sure to read all the posts in the links above.)

Here's a pic of a T-bucket with a poly 318 I pulled off the internet a while back:

Oh
I like obscure engine in my rods. It gives you something to talk about. My vote would be for an early hemi or the poly. Maybe a 361? You dont see too many of those either.

If money is a concerne then go for the LA 318, lot's of speed parts available too.
If not the poly will get alot of "what is that?" from anyone not a mopar fanatic. The one in the above bucket looks really nice. I don't even know if there is a four barrel for it, but obscure is the way to go with hot rods. Even the 318 is rare in the (sbc) world of hot rods.
