I know nothing about 904s. Are they simply a modified/updated 727? What do you mean by a "lock up" do you mean the convertor is different?

The 904 was the smaller auto trans used behind the Slant and small blocks.

Yes, the lock-up is the converter.

Yeah, but not all trannys newer than that year, were lock up; I had a 4 speed (518) that was non lock up. out of a 92 1 ton B van with a 360 in it (last year for the LA 360 before the magnum.) also the 904 in my '78 Fury (early car, built in 9/77) and the 727 in my'83 3/4 ton truck, are NOT lockup ones. yet, the 727 in my 1/2 ton '81 4WD WAS a l/u. so it was not "across the board" usage.
