COMPLETELY new drum brake system on my 71 Cuda. From the lines to the wheel cylinders. Not sure which fluid to use. The DOT 5 silicone is great for not damaging the paint, but they say it will always have a spongy pedal feel. DOT 3, 4 and 5.1 give a harder pedal feel, but can damage the paint. What are you guys using and experiencing?

Dot 5 across the board, no exceptions. I have yet to have a spongy pedal. I read in Mopar Action a while back that Chrysler ran dot 5 in police cars from the late 60's on up.

I've been running Dot 5 silicone fluid in my Barracuda since 1986. It has never had a spongy pedal. Pedal has been rock hard since day one. Even more so after I switched over to discs.

Just make sure the system is properly bled and you won't have a problem. This is the key.

I wish I had run DOT 5 in my new system. I was given some free new DOT 4 and ran that at the time...I will make the swap when I get better suited master cylinder (piston is too big)

There was a fantastic article published by the SAE
about a year ago on studies of silicone vs dot 3 or 4 fluids. I will see if I can find it, but the short version was silicone was not recommended for
long term use. Now before a bunch of you start crying about how you have used it for years, as I
have also, there is fact behind it. If you totally
purge your system (change the silicone fluid) I believe it was on a 2 or 3 year schedule it is
fine, otherwise the silicone would develop moisture droplets in the fluid as it doesn't absorb moisture like dot 4. Anyway, I am sure I
have the article somewhere in my engineering docs.

I think either is fine but I would use dot 5 if the paint contact is an issue. I think changing/flushing the fluid out is important in the long run & generally not done/overlooked & the same with PS fluid.

I generally prefer SuperBlue Racing fluid, dot4 rating seems to work well on 4 wheel disc set-ups

4 wheel drum is a pretty primative system.

Not likely to see any benefit from a superior fluid like dot 4 or 5

I would just run dot 3 in it, if it was me.

Modern dot 3 more than meets any spec an old 4 wheel drum system ever had.
