Got a 70 Road Runner the car is a western high desert car. The paint got burned off and has surface rust. In my area there is no one I trust to media blast it. Have had a hood and door warped. I was gonna DA the roof with 80 grit, but need something to remove any rust left in very small pits. Any info or the best product to use on this. Thanks for any help from you guys/gals.

I agree with the Rust Mort. I had a Challenger hood with surface rust. I removed as much as I could with sanding just leaving small pits. Used Rust Mort per instructions, then primered and painted hood. That was 11 years ago and still no problems.

I like the 3M paint and rust remover wheel. Put it in your drill and go to town, easy to use. No chemicals to worry about. I did the whole barracuda with about 2 wheels. Takes is down to the metal. Won't warp the panel unless you just sit on one spot and push real hard. I got it at Walmart, automotive section.

3M paint stripping wheels work great.

Small pits can be cleaned out with a dremel using one of the super small grinding bits on slow speed.

Jeff......not the easiest method, however my badly pitted roof skin was removed and then taken to Central Michigan Stripping in Charlotte, MI area. It was chem stripped to bare metal. My body guy then re-spot welded it into place.

The vinyl top got removed from my charger and sanded down. Still had black rust pits. I applied rust-mort then rust-seal to roof. I lost interest in car. It sat outside for 22 years before I brought back in garage and sanded roof down again. The roof was still in same condition as it was 22 years ago. I would say the rust-mort held up.
I have been playing with evaporust soaked rags. Letting evaporust set on roof and working the rust with a wire brush. That is a tedious job but is working well cleaning out the black pits.

On surfaces that are parallel to the ground you can make a circular dam out of clay and pour Evaporust inside it and it will stay there long enough to work. Remove it with a suction bulb once the area is clean. I did part of a trunk floor that had surface rust this way years ago as I did not want to haul the car to a sandblast shop for such a small area.

I suppose you could do this to the top of a roof if you wanted to jack the car up as needed to keep the work area flat enough to keep the Evaporust contained. wrench

Try Naval jelly and coarse steel wool. I found this method on a hot rod website. Apply the Naval jelly to a one or two foot square area and let it set for fifteen minutes. Scrub it with the steel wool to remove the rust. The first coat usually gets the process started. It will take multiple applications to remove the heavier rust. I used a .100" "dixie pin" and a small wire brush to remove rust from the pits that remain. Wipe it off, rinse it with water and dry it to prevent it from flash rusting. Prime it when you are finished. I did a Challenger roof this way. Takes some time and elbow grease but it's dirt cheap.
