Ok thanks for the good info. I'm thinking the stock metal type head gaskets on my 440 were .020. Are those good enough to use? I'll make sure me and my machinist are on the same page and and make all of our measurements before we buy anything to get everything right.

The thin OE type metal gaskets were made for iron heads. Some folks have had good luck using them on Al heads... but many, me included, prefer thicker composition style or Cometic MLS.

A standard Felpro blue composition gasket (.038-.040") seems to work well with BB and aluminum heads on a mild build.

Ok I understand it now better. So I'm running Aluminum heads and you stated before you like the pistons .005 in the hole with a 0.036 gasket? So does anybody really what the best quench height is or is it just a guessing game? In those builds where they really were getting good hp and torque numbers they never really said what gaskets and so forth but it was just a zero deck build. I want to run an engle k58/k60-110lsa hydraulic cam but I'm still lost with carb set up. I think those people used a 950 hp holley but do I really need one that big? Whatever I use I want to run an electric choke.

A rebuilt 440 with 10:1 compression and Edelbrock heads should make about 500 or 525 hp. The carb needs to have 1.4 cfm per hp so that works out to a 750 carb. You do not need a 950.

Ok thanks. I think I'll get it square decked and just do from there.

What kind of carburetor do you like. I've had a few guys tell me they really like the quick fuel carbs.

For a street car I'd use an Edelbrock carb, probably the 800 cfm version but there are a bunch of other carbs that would also work.
