I have a pump gas BB Duster that I built just to drive, no racing. I had Flowtech Raptor mufflers on it, sounded good but they were junk, lasted a few months and rattled.

I wanted Dynomax Super Turbo's but after reading alot about how they tend to rust, and the 3" version bottleneck's down to 2.5" inside the muffler, I decided against them.

I read about a muffler test that clearly showed the stainless Borla XS muffler as the quietest at idle and WOT than most of the performance mufflers. So tonight I spent the extra coin on them and all I can say is they are not what I was looking for, they're louder than what I wanted.

I'm thinking of taking them back off the car in the morning and getting something else but I don't know what? I won't have an X-pipe on this car til next year, might do an H-pipe next week, my pipes are 3", no tailpipes either. All this stuff would help but money is tight and spare time is even tighter.
I'm thinking of putting the Super Turbo's on and seeing how long they last?..

An x pipe will help tremendously.
I have bullets on my car, before the x pipe, when it was just regular duals, it was unbearably loud. I had an x pipe added, and it became pleasant to drive.

Yea I know, just don't have an X-pipe in my near future, only a couple months of cruising left, or less. I had a 9 second DartSport with an X-pipe, Magnaflows, and turnouts. It was quiet and fast, the system didn't slow the car down at all.

I'm just afraid to try the Super Turbos and have them rust out or blow out next spring, my car gets some moisture all winter in the garage as my garage is attached to the kitchen and the door gets opened alot.

If I wanted the car to be this loud, I would have bought the $40 Jones Max Flow stainless mufflers instead of the $90 Borlas. My Borlas are 3" with offset inlet and center outlet, #40359.

I was also looking at the Walker welded Ultra-flow's, they may not be any quiter than my Borla XS's though.

I'm not sure why the super turbos would blow out in less than a year unless you're driving through the winter salt and not washing the undercarriage...I've got 10 years on a set... twocents

That's good to hear, I think I'm gonna try them tomorrow and sell the new Borla's.

I really need a center inlet and offset outlet but can't find a super turbo in 3" like that.

Just coming up on a 1000 miles on my 3" Super Turbos, offset inlet, center outlet on a 475" hemi 70 RR. tti's 2&1/8 primaries, with full 3" exhaust.

I like the idle, fairly quiet but not too quiet. There's a drone it goes through at a certain rpm per gear. A little loud at 55, and a bit too loud at 70-80mph at 3200rpm with 3.54 gears to where I ware ear plugs for a log trip.

I didn't put any aftermarket sound deadener in. I wanted to see how it was as is. I mostly go to local cruises so not a big deal yet with that. Putting around town is OK but have to speak up a little for a conversation. Mostly the interstate roar that bothers me. The Passon 5 speed may help a little with that, work cause the more rpm's the loader it gets.

Me too. 10+ years and ~15k miles with X pipe on a 496. I like them... you can hear them but not obnoxious. The 3" comes in different case sizes... the smaller size does neck down and the larger does not from memory.

I have super turbos on both of my cars, my 71 has a 446 and 3" X pipe system, plenty quiet for me. Try them I think your like them.
My 71 has had them for 10 years but has low miles and always indoors.

My 74 with a 340 has had them since 1988 and has a H pipe and has about 30K miles on them. I have had the car out to Bonneville on the salt and on the roads out there going 118 mph for miles at a time. I mean like wide open for 5 mile at a time., really beating the hell out of the car. Been there 3 different years and beat the car like 5-15 passes each time, that's a lot of beating.

Now my mufflers are blown out big time. They are much louder and sound like crap really. I just noticed a small rust hole in one muffler at least recently and the car has been driven in the rain and has been stored outside under a awning during the spring summer and fall.

20+ years out of a muffler? I'm OK with that and will get the same mufflers again. BTW my pipes are TTI and have not leaked at all since the day I put them on in 88, good stuff. My pipes are still good after all these years.

The headers...not so much. They were thermo coated inside and ceramic coated outside and really were nice headers. But beating the car out at bonneville burned off all those coatings and the headers turned to mostly rust. They don't leak and I don't plan to media blast and recoat them because I know how beat they are. I am getting new TTIs. The system was old and used hard before the first trip to bonneville, so bonneville is not responsible for all the wear and tear, but sure speed ed it up.

I'll have to do some part number searching, I'm looking at part # 17744 and it says it necks down to 2.5" inside the muffler, I might just buy them anyways, I have DMH electric cutouts so I really want my mufflers to be quiet for the best of both worlds!

These Borla mufflers sound so darn good! I just know in the long run I'm gonna want something quieter.

I have had mine on two different cars for at least 10+ years and they sit outside all year long.

I have headers 3" to the x pipe and 2.5 back including the long case super turbo mufflers in offset in/out (gm locations) on the 496 in my Polara. With the x pipe sound is not loud at all.Mine did get quiter when I switched to the flowcrapper mandrel bent tailpipes with turn downs at the bumper.

IIRC the Super Turbo mufflers are reversible so you can get the configuration you need and turn it backwards.

I had the Borla pro xs on my supercharger mustang and loved it but I did have an X pipe and tailpipes.

I've had Super Turbo's on my Superbird since 1992,replaced both in 2003 and one about two years ago, have them on my 62 wagon (3") since 2012,no problems. One thing to remember, keep your receipt, they will replace them as long as you own them, that includes replacements. My only dislike is that the with full 3" Max Wedge system on my wagon, they are just a little louder than I'm comfortable with.

I just got my car running, 512 TTI headers and 3" x-pipe system. I opted for Dynamax 17221 and am unhappy with the sound. Too loud for me at idle and driving. I think I will replace with the super turbo's the system was going to come with. P/N 17769.

My wife's Barracuda runs the typical 3" #17793 Dynomax mufflers that came with the TTI X-pipe system.

The first pair lasted almost 10 years. Numerous short trips are what killed them in our case. (Just a street/strip car that makes LOTS of runs for ice cream with our 2 boys. The car is not driven or stored in wet conditions.)

The mufflers are supposed to have a lifetime warranty, but I had no luck with that. Dynomax said to go thru who I purchased them from. My inquiries fell on deaf ears at both ProMax Performance and TTI. down

I ended up buying a replacement pair from Summit. I suppose I will wait a few years and warranty my original mufflers at that point.

Hey Bill in my application, 72 B-body it calls for a 27" overall length muffler (17769) the one's you have are 23" overall (17793)

I hope the extra 4" makes them quieter than what you have.

ProSport, they will get loud pretty quickly as the center blanket will break down & leave the mufflers. With 3" exhaust, it's hard to quiet-down the exhaust without resonators. I build 3" core resonators that are 4" round body, & I use packing that will NOT break down & leave the mufflers. I can also build them in any length. If your 3" system is too loud, consider adding resonators - they will not hurt performance or restrict flow.

They Last about a year on my Chevy plow truck.

I got 2-3 years on them in Fox Mustangs.

They corrode from the inside and blow out the rear endcap and seam.

Bob, the super turbos probably sound good to you, but you won't like them when you see how much they hurt the power. My dad had Dynomax Ultra Flows on his road runner and thought they were too loud. So he got a pair of Super Turbos and liked the sound, but the power loss was very noticeable. So much so that he decided to change mufflers again...this time to a pair of Hooker Aero Chambers. Feels like it got all the power back and sounds really good. Louder than the super turbos, but not nearly as loud as the Ultra Flows.

His car has a 440 (+.040") w/ mildly worked 906s, 509/292 cam, and a 6 pack setup. 4 speed w/ 3.54 geared Dana. Has Hooker 1 7/8" headers and full 3" exhaust (no crossover) w/ tailpipes. Same motor w/ an automatic ran 11.80s in my cuda.

Thanks Chip but this car is 100% street and I have DMH electric cutouts if I need to let out some pressure, or frustrations. smile

I'm gonna add an H-pipe next week, and hopefully tailpipes over the winter. I must be getting old cuz I hate cruising in a mega loud car, and you already know I used to be quite opposite.

I went for 2 long cruises yesterday just cuz it sounded so nice with the super turbos.

Does anyone make a fully stainless turbo muffler? I'd imagine they'd be pricey.
