A guy I know through work gave me two Danas. One being a 3.54 open and the other a 3.73 PowerLok.


But, Ive got a problem with the 3.73 unit. One axle is broke in 2 places and wont come out. It broke off at the hub and also in the housing. Short of cutting the housing to get the axle out, any ideas?

The other axle on the same rear wont come out either. Ive tried my best to get the floater assembly out, but it wont budge.

I really dont care if I have to cut it all apart as the housing is too narrow (dually rear) for me.

You will have to change the Spider gears out in the Powerlock if you use it. Most 3/4 and 1 ton rears have 16 spline axles. I believe Randy's Ring and Pinion sell the replacement gears.

I would start by chop sawing the housing ends off then see how far in the axle is broken. Then possibly weld a chain to whats left to pull it out. You have to cut the housing ends off anyway.

On the other axle, do you mean you can't get the flange to separate from the hub? If so one well placed blow from a sledge on the end of the flange should convince it. Repeat if necessary.

Once you get it out you might be able to coax the broken one out by pushing a long rod thru from the good axle side and shoving the broken one out.

I agree about cutting the housing end off if you are going to use it in a car. That way you can pound the snot out of the backing plate to remove it. It may also offer up more axle to grab hold off for removal. If you can't grab it, as suggested, weld something to it.
