Ok,

I'm in the process of ordering all the parts I need to rebuild my motor. It's a 2001 360 Magnum motor (bored .030 over) that will have an Edelbrock Air Gap Intake, Holley 3310 DP, EQ heads that allow a .500 of lift, 2.02 intake and 1.62 exhaust. I'm using Speed Pro H116CP30 cast pistons. This motor will be mainly used for the street with a few trips to the track every year. I'd like to go with a cam that has a nice lope, and something that produces power across the RPM range. I don't want a custom ground cam shaft because this build is on a budget and I can't see the need to pay twice as much for one. I favor Comp Cams, but I'm open to all suggestions. So if you could give me suggestions; Make, description, model # and best price from what vendor it would be greatly appreciated. Lastly, try to estimate the HP/TQ this set up would produce.

Thanks for your time.

Regards,
Charles

if you're on a budget, I'd contact delta cams in tacoma, WA, or maybe bullet cams, or hughes to see if they can regrind your stock cam. should be ~ 1/2 the price of a new one.

I'd shoot for 218-224@.050 on the intake, 4-6 degrees more on the exhaust, and the lift you're looking for.

if you have to have new "off the shelf" cam, I'd look at the comp XR265HR. a "custom" ground cam will probably be only $20-50 more than a "shelf" cam from any of the major cam vendors, not double.

that said, I'd also look at bullet cams,

http://bulletcams.com/Masters/HRlobes.htm

and I'd probably look at the HR276/305 lobe on the intake, and the HR280/320 lobe on the exhaust...if you want lopey, shoot for a 108 LSA, probably installed at about 104 ICL. if you want the idle smoother, widen out the LSA. narrower LSA will give more peak midrange torque, but a wider LSA will yield a flatter torque peak and carry the HP/torque higher in the RPM band.

where are you getting the heads from? the ones on ebay from clearwater cyl heads? check with CMengines.com, they were significantly cheaper than clearwater when I was looking into EQ heads. I'd have them quote them using SBChev 11/32" stem valves .1" longer than stock in 1.94 or 2.02 and 1.6/1.625 gead size, 5 angle valve job. that opens things up to a lot more spring/retainer combos to adjust installed height, and set them up for up to .550-.575" lift, which opens up a lot more cam lobe choices and the opportunity for more power. set up like this, CME quoted me $850/pr+ ship about a year ago.

Hey Patrick thanks for the information. I will looking into those EQ heads, because that's in the area of my budget for heads.

As far as cams go, it doesn't have to be cheap. I just don't want to pay 350 for a custom grind.

Any other suggestions would be great.

I'm looking to get this motor in the 410-430 HP range.

I guess $300 for a off the shelf cam vs. $350 for a custom ground one doesn't seem like a big deal, but when I checked with delta cams in tacoma, wa a few years ago, it was about $100+ ship both ways to get my '86 roller 318's cam reground.

for that HP level, I guess I'd up the .050 duration to 224-230 on the intake, and maybe try get more lift....

Right now Comp is offering custom grinds for the same price as a shelf cam. At least it says so on their website.

fyi

One thing to remember about regrinds is that although you can alter the base circle to make dramatic increases in lift and duration, you will likely be somewhat limited (maybe +2 to -2) in terms of Lobe separation angle.

I was wondering if I should use a camshaft similar to the one used in the 390 HP Moper Performance crate engine?

The specs are 288°/292° Advertised Duration (230°/234° Duration @ .050") 0.501"/0.513" Lift.

Any opnions?

not a bad cam, I am not a fan of real lopey idles and narrow LSA, personally....it should definitely give you a lopey idle and make good power, but you'll probably want ~2800 RPM stall or so, I've heard these cams don't really come on strong untill ~3k...

That cam would make a mild street performance cam in a 440, but in a 360 that would sure be a bit of cam. It'll work on the street and have a lopey idle. I would be sure to invest in a good converter, I think you'd be happiest with something that flash stalls to at least 3500 with that combo.
