Doing some resto work. What is the correct oil filter that would have come on a 1970 Challenger T/A from the factory? What was the part number? What would it have looked like? Would a red white and blue L-19 or L-72 be okay or maybe even correct? Are there any reproductions being made?

I believe its the green L72 with the embossed 'M' on top. No reproductions that Im aware of, but NOS one can be had for a cool $1K.

beat me to it. Also, as far as Im concerned, they were on the motor when painted so most of the time, you'd never even know what they looked like except for the embossed M

The Red White and Blue ones look so much better. I'm guessing those are later replacement filters not assembly line? I think there would be a much larger market for repops of those. They aren't cheap either but not $1K yikes

The color of the assembly line filter looks the same as zinc chromate self etching primer I have on my shelf. Why not just buy a good quality filter, spray it with texture spray, then paint it with the primer and then paint it orange around the base where it's lettered? That way you wouldn't have to worry about the letters assuming the filter was on the engine when the engine was painted. Would be nice if someone would make a decal of the lettering so you could put it on any filter too.

I am 90% sure that they were installed AFTER paint and during the installation as the filter is an area that sticks out and would be an easy part to get damaged should something bang into it. Think of all the money Chrysler would waste replacing new filters on an engine.

Yeah ,you are right.Dave is not doing the filter...he says the lettering is the tuff part.Textured paint and the heat apparently makes longevity an issue for a rub on dry transfer decal and a regular decal just would not look right. He was tossing the idea around but has no plans to make any. Whoever can make a reasonably priced one could sell thousands.
