Hello All

How do I determine if the rear window uses a rubber gasket or butyl?

The car has been apart for many years, so memory is out the window!

I have searched and it seems to go both ways, makes me more confused......Don't know if it is a year thing or what?

The car is a 71 Dodge Dart Swinger

Thank you

My 75 4 door has a gasket, and I think it is the same glass as a 2 door.

Yes, a Gasket is necessary, without a gasket the glass will just fall through the opening. You will more than likely need a sealer as well so that it doesn't leak.

I used 3M Bedding and glazing compound, its make for exactly this purpose.

Here's a link to the stuff I'm talking about.

I doesn't go both ways, it requires a gasket, there is no optional about that. You might use sealer in addition to the gasket, but I never do.

They say there are no such thing as a stupid question.
They say there is always the exception that proves the rule.
Don't be the exception.

Thank you guys for the input!

The glass is bigger than the opening, that confused me a bit.

Plus this car was worked on before we bought it (about 10 years ago?), and the back window was out by the looks of the repairs- including brazing and rivets holding in clips.

I thought the glass was butyled in (don't exactly recall) but they may have butyled it to the old gasket or something not up to par.....

I will order a gasket by Monday.

How much bigger? In my opinion if the glass is larger than the opening you are wasting your time buying a gasket that is not going to work.

I can't speak for this model of vehicle but....

Some gasket/glass installs on vehicles the glass are not centered into the opening, but will sit "outside" the pinchweld the gasket surrounds, so glass size will not always dictate installation needs ( gasket vs urethane/ tape kits set)..

I would recommend you make sure you have the correct back glass though......

If the glass is bigger, the glass is maybe out of a 4door,you need to find the Glass out of a 2 DOOR HARDTOP.

The glass is from this car, but it has been out for 3 years and I don't remember how the rear glass was set up.

The glass must sit out of the pinch weld in a gasket.

I just googled pictures of Darts, and there definitely a gasket between the glass and stainless trim.... should have done this in the beginning!!!

Just pulled out my old glass catalog..

WOW, three different selections of "Dart" 2dr models with six "6" different options for back glass #s

Swinger is broken out separately LL or LH or LM or LP with a 23 vin#.. 73 and back is the same Nags # B3861 with a size of 26X52 given ( appx)

Vin# with a "29" uses a B4439 with a size of 24X54

I cannot tell you if its a gasket or glue in with my info..
