Before others chime, are we certain its an engine vs drivetrain vibration, ie, is vibration present when reving over 2Krpm in nuetral when sitting still? A OEM 400 is an externally balanced motor, so can you see if the correct vibration dampner is installed on the rebuild for a 400? but I am not certain on the dampner and consider this a bump.

Reality check, that half the population is smarter then 50% of the people and it's a constantly contested fact.

Plus the converter, Best to identify the crank and see what it needs to balance it .

converter will only bolt on one way. check to make sure the correct torque converter was installed. 2 weights side by side. is it an auto tranny or manual? also make sure all cylinders are firing, and plug wires are on to the right firing order.

My 440 had the same nasty vibration after the rebuild, turns out i didn't have the converter WITH the weight welded to it. It is a cast crank so the off balance converter was needed. Find out what year the motor is and make sure it has the required weight for the converter.

I would not assume anything. Any of these cars especially as old as they are, can be built of mismatched parts. You might have the wrong converter and dampener both.

Don't discount stuff like fan belt(s) bent pulleys and bad water pumps/ AC compressor, etc. That's easy to find. Simply remove the belts and try it for a minute or two Use your head. If the thing vibrates in neutral, obviously it's not driveshaft, rear, etc, etc.

I bought a car with an internally balanced 383 with the same vibration. Took it apart and it had a 400 cast crank thrown onto it. Wrong damper etc.
I'll never forget the guy's name that I bought that one off.
