My 4 speed with factory pistol grip works great except that it tends to come out of gear while cruising. I think it happens in all gears. What is the cause of this?

All gears is worn sliders and dogs. If it is only in the same direction on the shifter (1 and 3 OR 2 and 4) adjust the shifter rods (all of them) one turn longer for 2/4 and one turn shorter for 1/3. Also, does your shifter have stops. If it does back them out a turn or two.

Discussed this w/Jamie Passon. Popping out of gear usually indicates worn gear teeth.

What car? If it is an E body, and you are using a factory/Mopar poured rubber style shift boot, the boots are too stiff, and will push the transmission out of gear.

Also make sure the input and output shaft bearings are not loose (worn). I had a few over the years pop out of fourth and second when the output shaft bearing was loose. Ron

I have tried it without the boot and it made no difference. I will probably be rebuilding it. i just want to make sure I address the problem when I do the rebuild.

Same thing happened to my tranny in my '70 Cuda back in 1977. The guy that rebuilt it said it was bad synchros from what I remember. He did a GREAT job rebuilding it - felt like new when he was done. Subsequent rebuilds on this trans were never as good as that first time.

Whichever is closer to you, Brewer's or Passon? That's where I'd suggest.
