Who's using one, and what kind of mileage gains did you get with yours?

Just got my Smarty Jr and tried it out on my '03 2500 common rail auto...Got it on the highest setting for now at 100hp...Very awesome...Stainless exhaust shows up next week. Obviously I would not tow in that mode, but curious what you guys get with them turned up....I had an average of 17.9mpg because I do a lot of around town driving...We will see if I can keep my foot out of it.

My 06 megacab has smarty. Previous owner put on a 5" exhaust from the turbo back. It's also got a small lift/level kit and 35" mud tires on 20" wheels--a combo that has to weigh 75lbs!! I'm getting around 15-16 mpgs with the Jr. set to level 2 with defaults. Avoiding level 3 until I have trans work done. Just want to be safe

Oh yea, ignore the overhead lie-meter. Mine reads 17-18 instead of the 15-16 I really get

So a couple of questions....Mine does not smoke at all..Just a puff at the hit, is there supposed to be more smoke, or am I good? All the vids show guys rolling tons of coal.

I left all the settings at each level just as they came, I did not mess with them, just kinda drove a couple of miles on each setting....Heck I am not even sure what an '03 is stock for hp and torque...My 4" stainless turbo exhaust should be here next week, so that will help over the stock pipe I am sure..

I have an edge. I have not turned it up as I have an automatic. I bought it for the gauges and speedo re-calibration and have been running it on economy mode. MPG is worse than before as I put 33" tires at the same time. Looks like I'm averaging about 17mpg (hand calculated) in town. Freeway is all over the map. Driving to CA I got almost 23mpg (empty). Stuck in CA freeway traffic dropped to 17mpg.

Your hp and torque depend on whether or not you have the HO motor:

I don't think you will see a lot of smoke out of an 03 the turbo does not spool-up like the 04 and up. Max boost is like 18-20. Mine with the tuner turned up will puff at the hit but not a lot while running at speed.

"Stoich trucks don't smoke"

Guys blowing massive smoke are not tuned properly. A good tune should only net you a slight haze at WOT. Mine also puffs smoke until the turbo spools, then the only noticeable smoke is from any soot build up from easy driving.

I like it that way. Don't want to smoke out people behind me just because I want to pass someone.

So is there enough fuel, cause I do not want to go the other extreme, and is that adjustment in the Smarty Jr?

if your 03 is the HO model and a stick it will be 305HP and 555 TQ. i had a 04 with a stick and could get around 23-24 on the highway. but at the time i was not using the smarty.the things you can change with the smarty JR are timing and torque management.on yours mads left the rail settings stock.also 03-early 04 had the same turbo. 04.5 is when they went to 325HP and 600 TQ.

what helped out my 04 was a boost elbow, its raises your stock boost from lets say 20 psi to around 32/35 psi. it made a big difference in how my 04 ran. what i am saying is you have the fuel now you need the air to make more power.the one i bought was preset at 34 psi but here is just like the one i am talking about.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dodge-Cummins-Tu...;hash=item4625c

but if you have not already done i would recommend you get a boost gauge and a EGT gauge. also you can change your timing setting for better mpg. I don't know why but every cummins truck i have had gets better fuel mileage on the higher HP settings. I have a 2011 ram that has a H&S MCC custom tune that's so posed to be a round a 450HP tune at the rear wheels and my last tank check i got 17.8 mpg. Which i dot think is to bad for winter fuel and a truck that weighs 8400 pounds with me in it. also this truck when i first g0ot it i was lucky if i got 14 in the winter last year.

You will never get above 20 with an 03 auto now a stick version I don't know. Correct I should of said 04.5 has the better turbo.

Diesels like to run with excess air. "Rolling smoke" generally means 1) not enough air for the fuel 2) high exhaust gas temp 3) extra soot in the oil 4) shorter engine life.

Advancing timing will increase cylinder pressure and probably economy... but is loading up the heads, pistons rods, bearings and crank more. They may not like that for very long...

My last couple were 6-speed HO trucks...This '03 is not...Its just an Auto, and I was lucky to find it in the time I had.

Mode 2 says its tow mode, so we will see, as I will go down to that next time I hitch up,

You will experience better fuel mileage in the higher performance setting than you will in "economy mode or tow mode" you just have to keep your foot out of it...which is hard to do.

I can tell cruising along it needs less throttle....Actually a lot less. It accelerates with a vengeance...Pretty surprised really.

I can't speak for that exact tuner, but in my 01 like many others, I get the best mpg in level 5, the highest level.
