I bought a new Barracuda with a 4 speed in 1970. When I took it in for all the fluids to be changed, I was amazed that the trans had ATF in it from the factory.

That contradicts this. This is a 70 owners manual. Read the bottom of the page.

Thanks to all of you for your input. I live in a growing city of 70-80 thousand people and not one parts house had pennzoil synchromesh or had even heard of it...go figure. I refilled the transmission with atf and it meshes gears much better than it did with the GL-5. I will find the synchromesh oil and replace the atf with that product. 69y2RT recommended Mopars version called synchromesh also. I will try that if i don't locate the pennzoil product. The cold isn't an issue as I drive the Dart mostly in the summer. Thanks, again, is this the best site for information or what?!

I read somewhere that Chrysler once stated that one of there bigger mistakes was putting ATF in 833's. It did not lubricate well enough and wore out the internals of the tranny. Of course I live in Texas and I have no problem with gear lube. At zero weather, I could see running ATF. It probably flows like honey at that temp.

My '69 Dart Swinger 340 came from the factory with geal lube in the A833. When I turned it into a Super Stocker and slick shifted the tranny I tried using B&M ATF in it. After about the 4th race first gear galled on the shaft when I was going 110 mph in 4th gear. That blew the tranny, driveshaft and rear end. When I put everything back together I went back to gear lube and I never had another tranny problem.

A friend of mine parted out a '71 340 duster in 1973 with only 1700 miles on it. I have the 833 out of it as well as some other parts. The trans still has the factory lube in it. ATF. That said, it will get gear lube if it ever gets used.

Oil is judged by sheer strength. High gear load and oil temp dictates viscosity with dino oil.
