Part two consists of the front drum . For this build I am using Alto red racing clutches and Koline steels. If all goes well I sould be able to fit five clutches in the front drum for more holding ability in high gear.

The pressure plate was de-glazed using a crossbuff. I also de-glazed the drum surface with a crossbuff.

Here is a pic of the assembley lube I will be using during the entire build.

All of the seals on the drum and piston were lubed with assembley lube before installation. Make sure the lip of the seals are facing down twards the drum.

The next step is to install the piston. Make sure the seal surfaces on the drum are lubed up also. Try to apply even pressure with your hand and seat the piston.

Next step is to install the springs. Mine came with 9 and are installed as such.

The next step was to compress the springs and install the lock ring that holds the spring retainer in place. I used a floor jack and two pieces of wood butted up aganst my shop celing. Don't try this at home!!! Use a press or go to a trans shop and let them do it.

Pictured here is the installation of the steels and clutches. Clutches should be soaked with trans fluid for 15 miniutes before installation. after all five were installed I cheched the gap between the pressure plate and the retainer ring. Ah, a perfect .070

stay tuned for part 3, the rear drum!!

PERFECT Timing!
I have to rebuild a '71 727 soon and this will do teh trick!
Thanks a bunch!
Where do you get your clutch plates/trans parts?
Is this trans being built for strip only or can be used for street duty?

Thanks,

Gil

Thats one way to compress the springs that I have to admit I never thought of.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

Good series of info.
Attached is a pic of the factory spring compressor in the manual. I made one based on this pic and it works nice. Just tighten the bolt.

Good pictures and good tech info.
I have my Dart up on stands now, getting ready to pull the 727 for a rebuild.
If need be, can I PM you for advice?
Thanks.

I'm not an expert on 727 trans builds. I'm learning as I go. I hope to post best practices based on imput from several good sources. I must say that a lot of how these transmissions are built and modified is based on personal preference. Carl Munroe wrote a book on " How to rebuild and modify the 727 Torqueflight". A great resource.

Very good! After finishing it... someone should put it in the tech articles!

It's good to have big pics for better resolution and to see the details!

FYI,

In photobucket you can checkbox each photo and click on the generate HTML tags at the bottom of the page. Use the thumbnail for message board links. Copy and paste, done deal. You can write notes inbetween each pic as you have been. It will do something like this for you and not kill the folks with dial up.

Then the viewer of the post can click on it if the want the bigger pic.

I'd keep saving the pics to photobucket as you have been. The big pics are great for detail.

Great thread.

HTH

Rob

I bought that book a couple of weeks ago. When I first looked at it, I was quite intimidated by the transmission. Now that I've read it at least 7 times, I'm ready to tear into it.
I have spent the past couple of days making all the tools as outlined in chapter 5 of the book.
