Mi.
Is there any way or ways to identify a car dana from a truck dana?. I looked at a Dart yesterday for the second time that has a dana installed with 3" inboard spring locaters and was wondering how to tell what the true application of the dana was. Thanks.

416 stroker from Nick at Compu-flow. 11.14 in full street trim. Seems like a new best every time out.
11.06 open headers----so far!!

A car Dana 60 will have provisions to mount a pinion snubber. The truck units will not.

I believe all the car danas have a pinion snubber mount and none of the trucks do.

On the back side of the right axle tube will be the 6 digit BOM # and with the aid of a Dana/Spicer catalog you can identify the original application...only if the original tubes are still in place, of course. OEM car Danas are few and far between and really don't justify a premium price tag.

What he said. You can find the catalog on one of the truck axle parts vendors web site. As I remember I found mine buy googling "dana 80 parts"
By the time you're done buying the parts and labor to convert a truck axle, it's close enough to a Strange or Moser built D60 to justify buying one of theirs. They will even weld in the spring perches in the right place for a small fee.

Many trucks have 30 spline axles.
Cars have 23 or 35 depending on year.
I know someone the cut down a truck axle and used 30 spline axles from a 8.75 rear.

My 60 had 35 spline axles, it depends on the truck application. Many Fords had 35 spline in the 3/4 ton with a dana 60 front and 23 spline with the 44 front. Dodge was similar. Camper specials also could have 35 spline. There was also a 16 spline in the early 60's. I found a power lock and 35 splines for $75 and you CAN build a 60 for less than a grand if you use stock gear, stock power lock and get the core for around $100, shortening is only around $275, shafts from Dutchman are less than $500, its doable if someone is willing to do their own work.
