I recently bought a 727 transmission shell. It is pretty grimy and coated with lot of dirt, etc. The inside of the trans. parts look like new, of course. I was wondering what other members have used to really bring the aluminium shine back to the metal. I appreciate all your input. Thanks!

Simple Green and lots of scrubbing. Carb cleaner or reducer on any stubborn spots.

You can have it beadblasted too, but you will need to clean it really well before putting it back together.

Transmission cases were just cast aluminum and probably did not have a lot of shine to them so don't expect it to be very pretty when your done.

I've used Castrol Superclean with good results...wear gloves.
I've never tried it but others have suggested oven cleaner.

I had an old cast alum. M/T valvecover that was nasty looking and tried out Easy Off oven cleaner on it.

It came out looking new!

I'm going to try it on the next transmission case I rebuild as I've tried pressure washing, Westly's Blech White, etc. with less than great results.

I would clean it with mineral spirits well then wipe with laqure thinner to get that last of it off.
Then shoot with Dulpi Color engine paint they have a silver that looks very close to new aluim and is 500 degrees as well
Or ya can sand and sand and sand and sand

You are insane dude!

What grit did you start with and what did you end up with?

Any particular polishing compound?

Did you clear it afterwards?

started with a metal file to get rid of casting flash then #80 down to 600 wet then black emery, gray emery and white rouge changing buffs with each compund.
I was not insane when I did the first 727 but was sitting on the border after the second one.Used a die grinder in the depressions with paper rolls.
what about an air gap?

I found a chemical that works good, but it is dangerous. There is a product called "Sabre" sold by ecochem.com. This is a sulfuric/hydrochloric acid solution and it is used to clean aluminum tanker trucks and trailers. You have to mix it down. I put the solution in a small spray bottle and wet the item down and let is sit for 5 minutes.

I cleaned all of my light castings with it and they look brand new now. You have to clean the parts after with soapy water. It is a good idea to wear gloves & goggles too as you will get chemical burns if this stuff gets on you. (just ask)

Really good results. Don't use it on chrome or it will remove it.

Also, the acid takes off the reflective paint inside so you will have to respray the reflector with reflective aluminum paint. (Which is the way the factory did it) I masked mine better.
