Hey guys. First off I will disclose I know basically nothing on this diesel cummins. I simply drive it everyday. It has 265K miles and have not had to crack a bolt on the engine. Tranny is another story.
I am getting ready to do a cosmetic overhaul this summer and am trying to get the drivetrain in similar condition before I add a new dually bed and paint the entire truck. I just changed a cracked exhaust manifold and at that time I mentioned to my diesel mechanic to tell me anything that needs attention. He stated my injectors are getting very noisy and will need to come out at some point in the near future. He said be prepared to spend $2800 to put new ones in... $2800, I am still frothing at the mouth. For 6 tiny injectors. The most expensive ones I can find on ebay are $1100 a set; so is the labor that intensive. Secondly if they are that expensive then why are they that expensive? Thanks for any input.

A big part of that will be parts markup. Mechanic Shops don't like it when you supply your own parts because they buy them at the local parts store and charge you markup. If you're not in a hurry you can order them and save some money that way. Then there's the labor. Changing diesel injectors is not the same as changing gas injectors. Diesel ones do take longer.

Well let's see, first off they are electronic. Working these things under 20K+ psi isn't like a gas injector. They operate under high voltage. Then to change them you remove the valve cover, all the fuel lines, remove the tubes that fuel lines attach to, then remove all the rockers and the wiring harness. Then you can remove the injector hold downs and the injectors. Don't forget gaskets, seals and washers plus adjusting the valves when you put it back together.

On top of that if you don't know what you're doing you could potentially electrocute yourself or lose some fingers.

Yeah, it's just six little injectors.

Like I stated I don't work on diesels. Don't get me wrong I understand there is more than meets the eye which is why I cringe when people react to the cost of a paint job or restoration. I just wanted to know what it entails. Now I do. Thanks for the input.

I just looked around at the diesel sites and $450/injector seems about the norm. That's $2700 for six of those puppies. Your 2005 is a common rail, much more expensive then the old 12 valve mechanical injectors.

What you are seeing on fleabay for $1100 is reman injectors.

Ahh. So he is right on the money at $2800 then. Going to be an expensive summer I see. Needs six new tires too... Uggg. Pretty bad when my six tires are 1/2 the price of the injectors.

You are lucky. Most are on their 2nd or 3rd set of injectors with that kind of miles. Clean fuel is the key to making them live. I would recommend an improved 2 micron fuel filter setup to help them last.

There's no way I'd throw that kind of money at a 265K motor, Cummins included. $2800 could get you a good used motor with half the miles.

A used '05 5.9 Cummins for $2800? I don't know, that sounds pretty cheap, even with 1/2 the miles it seems like the injectors on the used motor would be on borrowed time, plus swapping a Cummins is probably a lot bigger job than doing injectors, plus, for a Cummins, it's only about 1/2the way used up at best. That doesn't make any sense to me

The truck is going absolutely fine now. I am guessing many of these dually style trucks get used they way they are suppose to get used. Hauling, trucking down the interstate, etc with much of the time sitting, waiting for the next trip. Not mine, its my daily driver and with my job 1/2 of the week and am pounding on the miles. The largest thing I haul during the week is a tape measure. Don't get me wrong it has hauled many, many mopars however it is also my daily driver. I need to stop that pretty soon as I know those are waisted miles on this truck and it is now getting older. My diesel mechanic is floored that I have not replaced the fuel pump and or my injectors. The truck is not blowing white smoke it is simply getting louder and idles down a little rough and erratic. I bought this truck new for $52,000 and it is the first truck I have ever kept long enough to pay off. My wife thinks I am crazy for putting money in it but those payments were large and hurt to send out each month and I am not doing it again. So I will gamble on the engine and keep this thing running. If the motor goes I will have to find another one. I bought this bed for $500 and it will be painted black and installed this year, with new tires, seat covers and a new carpet. Hopefully I will have a new looking truck again and will last a while. We'll see and hopefully it's not a mistake.

I've spent way more than that on my 1st gen. but I agree with you, those large payments are tough. I like not having payments so I'm keeping this truck.

I own a repair shop and yes we do mark them up, most shops are around double what they pay for them at the parts store (mine is not that much), if you do a large volume like I do you get a significant discount over a walk in customer. Reason is when parts are wrong or go bad in the warranty period we often times have to eat the labor not to mention the hastle of getting the parts store to give you new parts and asociated parts. If you bring your own parts to me I am happy to do the work for you but I am not doing them free when your e-bay remans go bad or don't fit or... If I supply parts there is at least a 12 month 12,000 warranty where you bring it back and don't worry about it when they go bad I just fix it.

The labor time on there is only 3.6 hours, that is about right on in my expience.

All this shows why I don't drive a diesel, I can replace my whole truck for little more than the price of injectors on yours. I just replaced a complete V10 engine in a customers truck $1400 out the door.


I am not causing global warming, I am just trying to hold off a impending Ice Age!

I know diesel isn't the answer to everything but literally you couldn't give me a V10, Gasoline up here is still $5/gallon, unless someone is buying my gas I don't want a V10 under any circumstances. My Cummins is 10 years old and I've done oil changes, fuel filter changes and one injector line, my truck will pull anything, keep your gassers.

I recently replaced the injectors in my '03 CTD myself. New Bosch - not cheap, but I expect to get another 230,000 out of it.

The motor don't scare me, the injectors do, and if you don't notice a minor problem it can cost you an engine. 265,000 is about double when we start seeing injectors go bad.

As for V10 VS cummins my observations
12 mpg VS 18 mpg
$2.18 gal VS $2.83
$18,166 VS $15,722 to drive 100,000 miles $2400 difference, buy one set of injectors and the difference is GONE! And that does not count oil changes $100 ea every 5K $2000 diesel $35ea every 5k $700 V10 and fuel filters are $50 every 20,000 or so adds another $250 over the 100,000 miles. And the real kicker is the premium you pay to buy a diesel, they cost twice as much or even 3 times as a same year V10. The V10 truck would have to be worth absolute zero when you are done to use the "resale is higher" argument. Just looking at fuel cost and buy in you still save money with a v10, if you are not paying $5000 less than a diesel you are paying too much for a V10. The only difference is your engine sound don't say "big rig" and you can't roll "coal" on a prius.

You are not going to be able to buy a salvage 5.9 cummins with less than 150K miles for around $2800. Aint gonna happen. They are bringing 4 to 5K or more in my neck of the woods. If the truck is yours free and clear you should fix it and go on. With 265K on the clock, it owes you nothing. Everyone thinks they can drive these trucks for 500,000 miles and never open the hood. Not the case. Its just the way it is. I tell my customers all of the time you can do a lot of repairing vs the cost of a new truck. They have become ridiculously expensive to purchase new and many have decided to keep driving what they already have. Most of them say they cant justify a new truck payment as much or more than their house. Look at it this way, Whats $2800 bucks towards a new one? 4 or 5 payments maybe?

I had an 89 diesel dually 5 speed I bought brand new, truck got over 26 MPG. When the V10's came out in 94 I had to drive one so I go to the owner and ask to drive the first one they get.

I took it out and it ran great, good power and a nice truck. When I got back he asks me how I liked it. I said it's too quiet and it doesn't stink. I bought a 96 later with the V10. 10 MPG, that's 10, no matter what I did, man did I miss my diesel. If the diesel would have been a club cab I would have kept it. When it was time to get rid of the 96 I got another diesel and have been driving them ever since. As much as I liked the V10 I'll never get another gas truck. The mileage difference when towing is like 6 for the V10 and 14 for the diesel pulling my 30 foot enclosed.

I just did my 06 Ram 3500 DRW cummins.
I picked up the injectors for 1500.00 OEM remans and the labor was 700.00 in the Washington DC area.
My truck is new to me but has 400,000+ miles on it and runs great.

Thanks for the info guys. My 01 was a six speed and I really liked that truck and it was super strong and felt like it could pull my house off its foundation. It had a weird booster problem that they simply could not fix. After about $5000 and towing it four times with all of the brakes locked up solid I traded it in at Holley Dodge in CT for the 05 auto I have now. I will not be without a diesel again and hope this one lasts a long time.

Did the injectors in my dads 04 cummins. Spent the money on good injectors, not cheap chinese remans. Parts alone was close to $3K. We had it done in about 6 hours.

Was it a large noticeable difference when the new injectors were installed. Power, gas mileage, etc. Of course this question is for anyone who only replaced them to be proactive not the ones that replaced them because that were done.

Ive never done the injectors on a pickup truck but on the big trucks we usually see a decrease in power and an increase in fuel mileage when we replace them.

Myself I'd get some 100hp or so injectors. You'll get more hp/trq and better mpg's at the same time. I never worked on a diesel engine in my life before I got my truck... did a little research and changed the injectors in mine in a few hours.

Just one of the advantages of diesels. Hop them up easy and get better fuel mileage. Try doing that with a gas pig.

Myself I'd get some 100hp or so injectors. You'll get more hp/trq and better mpg's at the same time. I never worked on a diesel engine in my life before I got my truck... did a little research and changed the injectors in mine in a few hours.




Just one of the advantages of diesels. Hop them up easy and get better fuel mileage. Try doing that with a gas pig.




For $3000 I can rebuild a V10 and zero deck the pistons and get significantly more MPG and power. Heck I could even throw in a little port work on the heads and regrind the cam for more power/mpg for a few hundred more. The gas motor is not rocket science. The reason no one wants one is the stigma associated with less mpg but no one sits down and puts real numbers on paper. Back in 96 when diesel was a lot cheaper than gasolie sure, cummins makes the most sense but this is not 96 any more and the 12 valve is almost 20 years old and the 24 valve is very expensive and no where near the mpg.

Yeah, yeah, what ever you say, spend all that money, energy and time doing that to the V10 to get a little more power. It still won't get any better mileage and you'll be running premium fuel on top of that which is the same price as diesel. Sounds like a case of diesel envy to me.

BTW, tell me do they still make a truck V10? I can't remember. Things were so great they only made them for 10 years, just long enough to recoup the R&D on them.

Nope, had a couple diesels and don't miss them at all.

I have built magnum motors, a lot of them, and I can assure you from personal expience they respond VERY favorably to a few minor changes both with more power and more MPG. One time I took a 318 magnum, ran real tight quench and picked up 3+ mpg and had less pinging with no other changes at all. I have also seen substancial improvement in MPG and TQ with regrinding the cam to reduce overlap and increase lift a little. Injector swaps help a lot also. Again this is my personal experience with my money no one is paying my to sell a V10.

The reason no one bought the V10 is they failed to do the math when the times changed and diesel went way higher than gas. Even a stock V10 pulls better than a stock 12V hands down.

I have 486225 miles on my '06 CTD Dually. Never had the valve cover off. I fuel up at the end of a run which is daily. I buy fuel at my Speedway station and change the fuel filter every 20,000 miles. Maybe I better knock on wood.

You are way over due for a valve adjustment check.... You may not need any adjustments but a overhead check is a real good idea....

I know exactly what both can do and the 12 valve will still return at least twice the fuel mileage. With mild upgrades like a fuel pin, exhaust and timing bump the 12 valve walks all over the V10, will out live the V10 and will still get twice the mileage.

I'm still not sure who you are trying to convince here since the OP said nothing about V10's to start with.

So let's do a little real world math. I drive a minimum of 480 miles/week. With my 12 valve getting 23 MPG that's 21 gallons a week at $2.90/gallon equals $60.52.

My V10 at 10 mpg is 48 gallons of gas at $2.40/gallon equals $115.20.

In 1 year that is a difference of $2843.36, in 2 years $5686.72, in 3 years it's $8530.08. The diesel engine option has already paid for itself and will continue to pay for itself with at least twice the longevity of the V10. Oil changes are a wash because you can go twice as long on a diesel between changes. Fuel filters are a non issue because spark plugs, coils and wires aren't free either.

So let's just agree to disagree. You keep your V10 and I'll keep my diesel.

Yep....100% agree.......I have had 3 V10's, numerous 12 valves and one 24 valve and my 12 valve's were "by far" the best on fuel economy, pulling power and longevity.... 12 valve engines are the cat's ass..... (no pun intended)

I had a patient yesterday with an 06' with 765000. He bought it new. 2wd, stick, drw. Lifelong ford guy, well not anymore.lol. He said aside from normal wear stuff he's done a water pump, he thought a tps and a piece of the engine harness. Nothing internal, and still pulls daily with it.

Don't downplay reman injectors either. I have put many in duramax's, N14. 3406, 7.3's etc... They are not done by some joe blow at his kitchen table. Many come with warranties and I've never had to pull one I've put in. Some guys just weigh the cost vs benefit of new for their application.

You can also run an oil sample on it. See if your making oil etc. that's always good knowledge to have. Good luck.

I replaced the injector tips on my 05. The engine was starting to sound a little rough. After doing some research, I sent the injectors to F1 diesel, and had them test and install their nozzles. The cost was $1400. The engine runs smoother, but no change in performance. The only problem was that it took 3 weeks to get them back. The job itself is not too bad, but the forums are full of people who run into problems.

At 200k, the v10 is probably done, and cummins may need injectors...
Think this is more of a pay me now or pay me later scenario... cost to own and drive is about the same, now buying a gas is much less, but you also get about that same spread less when you sell a gas rig compared to a cummins....

If I was driving 480 miles per week commuting to work and fuel cost I'd be driving something better on fuel than a V10 or a cummins!
