Well let's see, first off they are electronic. Working these things under 20K+ psi isn't like a gas injector. They operate under high voltage. Then to change them you remove the valve cover, all the fuel lines, remove the tubes that fuel lines attach to, then remove all the rockers and the wiring harness. Then you can remove the injector hold downs and the injectors. Don't forget gaskets, seals and washers plus adjusting the valves when you put it back together.
On top of that if you don't know what you're doing you could potentially electrocute yourself or lose some fingers.

I just looked around at the diesel sites and $450/injector seems about the norm. That's $2700 for six of those puppies. Your 2005 is a common rail, much more expensive then the old 12 valve mechanical injectors.
What you are seeing on fleabay for $1100 is reman injectors.

The truck is going absolutely fine now. I am guessing many of these dually style trucks get used they way they are suppose to get used. Hauling, trucking down the interstate, etc with much of the time sitting, waiting for the next trip. Not mine, its my daily driver and with my job 1/2 of the week and am pounding on the miles. The largest thing I haul during the week is a tape measure. Don't get me wrong it has hauled many, many mopars however it is also my daily driver. I need to stop that pretty soon as I know those are waisted miles on this truck and it is now getting older. My diesel mechanic is floored that I have not replaced the fuel pump and or my injectors. The truck is not blowing white smoke it is simply getting louder and idles down a little rough and erratic. I bought this truck new for $52,000 and it is the first truck I have ever kept long enough to pay off. My wife thinks I am crazy for putting money in it but those payments were large and hurt to send out each month and I am not doing it again. So I will gamble on the engine and keep this thing running. If the motor goes I will have to find another one. I bought this bed for $500 and it will be painted black and installed this year, with new tires, seat covers and a new carpet. Hopefully I will have a new looking truck again and will last a while. We'll see and hopefully it's not a mistake.

I've spent way more than that on my 1st gen. but I agree with you, those large payments are tough. I like not having payments so I'm keeping this truck.

I own a repair shop and yes we do mark them up, most shops are around double what they pay for them at the parts store (mine is not that much), if you do a large volume like I do you get a significant discount over a walk in customer. Reason is when parts are wrong or go bad in the warranty period we often times have to eat the labor not to mention the hastle of getting the parts store to give you new parts and asociated parts. If you bring your own parts to me I am happy to do the work for you but I am not doing them free when your e-bay remans go bad or don't fit or... If I supply parts there is at least a 12 month 12,000 warranty where you bring it back and don't worry about it when they go bad I just fix it.
The labor time on there is only 3.6 hours, that is about right on in my expience.
All this shows why I don't drive a diesel, I can replace my whole truck for little more than the price of injectors on yours. I just replaced a complete V10 engine in a customers truck $1400 out the door.
I am not causing global warming, I am just trying to hold off a impending Ice Age!

The motor don't scare me, the injectors do, and if you don't notice a minor problem it can cost you an engine. 265,000 is about double when we start seeing injectors go bad.
As for V10 VS cummins my observations 12 mpg VS 18 mpg $2.18 gal VS $2.83 $18,166 VS $15,722 to drive 100,000 miles $2400 difference, buy one set of injectors and the difference is GONE! And that does not count oil changes $100 ea every 5K $2000 diesel $35ea every 5k $700 V10 and fuel filters are $50 every 20,000 or so adds another $250 over the 100,000 miles. And the real kicker is the premium you pay to buy a diesel, they cost twice as much or even 3 times as a same year V10. The V10 truck would have to be worth absolute zero when you are done to use the "resale is higher" argument. Just looking at fuel cost and buy in you still save money with a v10, if you are not paying $5000 less than a diesel you are paying too much for a V10. The only difference is your engine sound don't say "big rig" and you can't roll "coal" on a prius.

You are not going to be able to buy a salvage 5.9 cummins with less than 150K miles for around $2800. Aint gonna happen. They are bringing 4 to 5K or more in my neck of the woods. If the truck is yours free and clear you should fix it and go on. With 265K on the clock, it owes you nothing. Everyone thinks they can drive these trucks for 500,000 miles and never open the hood. Not the case. Its just the way it is. I tell my customers all of the time you can do a lot of repairing vs the cost of a new truck. They have become ridiculously expensive to purchase new and many have decided to keep driving what they already have. Most of them say they cant justify a new truck payment as much or more than their house. Look at it this way, Whats $2800 bucks towards a new one? 4 or 5 payments maybe?

I had an 89 diesel dually 5 speed I bought brand new, truck got over 26 MPG. When the V10's came out in 94 I had to drive one so I go to the owner and ask to drive the first one they get.
I took it out and it ran great, good power and a nice truck. When I got back he asks me how I liked it. I said it's too quiet and it doesn't stink. I bought a 96 later with the V10. 10 MPG, that's 10, no matter what I did, man did I miss my diesel. If the diesel would have been a club cab I would have kept it. When it was time to get rid of the 96 I got another diesel and have been driving them ever since. As much as I liked the V10 I'll never get another gas truck. The mileage difference when towing is like 6 for the V10 and 14 for the diesel pulling my 30 foot enclosed.

I just did my 06 Ram 3500 DRW cummins. I picked up the injectors for 1500.00 OEM remans and the labor was 700.00 in the Washington DC area. My truck is new to me but has 400,000+ miles on it and runs great.
