Working on my 727 transmission and will be tossing the governor support assembly. Thinking of making a bolt-on aluminum flanged spacer to take up the gap for the park brake assembly and oil passage blocking. What are you guys doing for this modification? Also, anybody ever lighten up the sun gear?

I cut mine down in the lathe. The gear portion is about 5/16" wide. The governor assembly is removed. Some people use a spacer on the shaft to take up the space from the removed governor. We just cut the snap ring groove further forward in the output shaft. The front of the park gear has been trimmed down just in front of the back governor ring groove. Been like this a couple of years. I run a Turbo Action manual VB which blocks the governor feed internally.

I made a spacer, IIRC a 1" aluminum conduit threaded coupling. Just chucked it up in the lathe, bored it to the correct ID, cleaned up the OD and cut it to length. The. Used the original snap ring, also tapped and plugged the feed hole. 727.

If you want to delete both the governor assembly and its support, all you have to do is remove them from the output shaft...no further action is required. Obviously, doing so will also delete the Park function.

A spacer of some kind is required if you only want to delete the governor assembly and leave the support in place.

I'm using a Turbo Action reverse manual valve body, so does it stop oil feed to this area? If so I can just make the spacer without the flange to bolt in place blocking the holes. Is this correct?

Above link shows indexing holes in sun shell.

Attached a pic of a park gear I machined for my 904. You can make an aluminum spacer or relocate the snap ring groove in the shaft.

Yes, all RVMV's block the governor ports in the case.

If you have a rollerized rear support it's beneficial to leave the governor support to seal off the rear of the bearing.

I run a CRT low band apply reverse manual valve body. When I removed the governer he had me tap and plug the oil passage in the park gear.

I think you're referring to the park pawl gear? I removed the governor. Then the rear was faced off until the teeth were .275" thick. The front half was cut down so the the thickness of the entire unit is .830". It weighs 14 oz.

No the sun gear assembly is inside the main housing of the trans. It is the large solid steel drum holding the front planetary gear.

If you follow John's link, it will show Jamesc lighting a sun gear SHELL. Which, in my opinion, will result in zip. Also, the gutted governor housing is so light, I don't worry about it either. If you own a mill, and want to use it, carve away, it's a matter of personal preference.

Ah the sun shell. I removed 1 lb. along with swapping my A&A steel drum for an aluminum part (7lbs total) it picked up a solid .10 in the 1/8 thru the 1/4. 2 mph in the 1/8, no more mph in the the 1/4.
