Its feels like Christmas when opening up packages with carparts The springs are the -1". I just hope the wheel/tire combo will fit when eveything is bolted. May be a dumb question, but which way have you mounted the AFCO shocks, if I understand it correct, the Afco´s can be mounted any way.. It also seems I need to make some spacers when bolting the shocks to the mounts. When reading the instruction from Calvert they say to mount the Transfer Link in the lower hole, BUT the "instruction setup" from YellowBullet says mount the transfer link in the upper hole.. -How have you done this, just followed the instructions per Calvert or... If everything fits after al is bolted, I am planing on adding sliders, but Ill start with the stock rear hangers... Thanks for the interest.. /Tom

We've had Caltracs for many years. They work well for us but remember to include the front set up in the equation. We mounted the shocks with the body at the bottom, makes adjusting the extension a pain on an E body but do able. Starting from scratch I would look to mounting the shock in front of the axle, it will help control axle rotation better. What H/P, Tq, weight are you at? and what tyre, 'box and rear ratio are you using? Edit: Bars are on the bottom hole here too.

Typically, use the front mount hole that puts the bar close to parallel w/ the ground.

Ill just see what way the shocks mounts the best.. Ive seen pics of the shocks mounted infront of the axel, at the moment I feel that a little overkill for my combo. Im not gonna break any records with my car. I race in a Streetcar class with a 9.99sec break out time. My best so far is 10.74@200mph, 1.57sec 60ft time. SS springs, Mopar DR shocks... In other words, nothing special.. Front end loose, I have the 5" of travel, poly bushings, 90/10 cheap Energy Suspension shocks.. Planing on adding Afco DA shocks in the front to..
My 496cid makes 770Hp, 670clb-ft tq. Weight is something like 3750lbs. Hoosier QTP 29x11.5-15, 727 from CRT and 4.56 ratio. Clicking 6900Rpm at the finnish line. May change the rearend ratio to 4.10 or 4.30, that way I could use 28" tires and also get the car to sit a bit lower in the rear.

OK, Ill mount the transfer link according to Calvert instructions and go from there..

I was curious to see how much these help you as I run just SS springs and have run 10.76 @ 124.49 with a 1.50 sixty. I was looking at your et and mph and think the 200 mph with the 10.74 ET is wrong ?? Curious what your mph is with the 10.70 et's. Ron

Sorry, its 200KPH, not MPH, so 120Mph for you colonials on that side of the ocean...
And just for your info, I have never really succeeded to run the car with out some issue that messed up my race weekend. That 10.74 run was followed with a 10.90 run with a messed up transmission (lost 1st gear). That run ended season 2013 with a trans failure. Then in 2014 I managed to mess up one of the front wheels just a day before the first race weekend.. Then I broke my wrist (motorbike accident) and missed out on the two following race weekends. 3 messed up rockers put an end to the 2nd to last race weekend.. Last but not least, come last race weekend got an oil leak, more or less like the Exxon Valdes.. So season 2014 was a
Ive ownded the Charger since 2003 and I have pushed that MF.... car more than actually driven it under its own power.. so, I have never found out what it could/can run... I have counted that I have in total 9 runs on the car, of those runs about 4-5 something happend... What I really should do, if I was smart, is to sell the car, tools and even the garage and start playing Golf or something, car racing does not seem to be working out for me...
Have a /Tom
PS. Just to let you know. During the years Ive owned the Charger I have "destroyed" one 440 engine, got close to destroying a 426 Hemi, messed up and rebuilt the 727 trans two times, as I write this, its waiting on its 3rd rebuild (In 2013 I bought a CRT trans that seems to hold up)... Burned 3 starters, busted up converter ringgears, droped a muffler on my head and got to wisit the ER with a concussion, had more carburetor fires than I care to remember (tried to run the Hemi on E85 when E85 first came out on the market)...etc...etc.... Its a never ending struggle, I cant seem to win, the car is just posessed. I thought of having a Priest come and sprinkle Holy water on it, but thought better of it, my guess is that the car would just burst into flames....

200 Kph is a tickle over 124mph to be pedantic so very similar times. These cars can throw a few curve balls but you seem to have had more than your fair share Keep plugging away and all will come good eventually (I've considered the chicken bone witchdoctor thing on a couple of occasions too ) Tig.

I got my Caltracs last week also for my GTX build. I went with neutral height and am really wondering if I shouldn't have gone with -1" I was worried that the 30 inch tires would rub on the the top of the wheelhouse. In retrospect we are tubbing the wheelhouse to fit the tire anyway.

Do NOT sell the car or give up. Make sure you continue to update us. Recount your experiences and thoughts on here as I love to read about your feelings, they are HILARIOUS! No disrespect or ill-intent, but your wording is just too funny. Good Luck.

Wow Tom you have had your share of problems. Sorry to hear about all them problems but I know you know how much its worth it in the end. I would say I must have good luck as I have not broke anything big on my 63. I only had an axle gear break a few teeth some years back and I was able to drive it home from the track like that. Heck I still run stock axles in my 63 but I only race once or twice a year. I do plan to upgrade my axles real soon though. But I have always been very happy with how well everyhing has held together and how well the wedge eng in my 63 drives and runs. Good luck with everything this year and keep us posted on how it goes. Update... Everything is now bolted to the car. I have to say I had a good time with this project, everything went so smooth ... -Yeah, right The car looks good with the -1" springs, the 30" tire really fills up the wheelwell. Things look good under the car to... ..Mounted the shocks and everything looked great, then I let the car down and noticed that the shocks are to long ...about 20 minutes of cursing followed.. I ordered the wrong length shocks. These are AFCO #3890, these would be OK if Id run SS springs, but to long with the -1" Calvert springs... ..what I should have done is waited untill I had mounted the Cal-Tracks, then checked the ridehight and decided what shocks to buy Measured the bolt to bolt lenght and its 17.7", so my question is now, should I order the 7" or the 8" stroke shock 7" AFCO # 3870 Extended Length (in):20.900 in. Collapsed Length (in):13.900 in. or 8" AFCO # 3880 Extended Length (in):22.900 in. Collapsed Length (in):14.900 in. -What do I need to do to get and understanding of what extended length shock I need? Do I just jack up the rear of the car and... -What? Thanks and for the interest.. /Tom

I remounted my afcos vertical in front of the axle and they were too short, so i extended the lower mounting down an inch and gusseted it. When they were in the same position as yours, i had a similar amount of travel to you and it worked fine, the rubber bumpers dont last five minutes though. Mick

Not that I am anybody but here is my for what it's worth . My shock's are on the same as yours . (some will say they are on wrong but afco's can be mounted either way ) My shock's are about that close to the bumpers also . I have the cal's in the bottom hole with a 1/16 gap on the bar's . I have the shock's on the stiff side.(don't remember how many click ) I run a 28x10.5 stiff slick. Foot braking.
I thought about this If my ride was a racecar only deal, I would not worry, Id just drive it, but my ride is also a streetcar, that makes me worry about messing up the shocks, because the roads over here are what they are and it probably would not take long untill the shocks got messed up because of bottoming out to hard...

Being that your on the other side of the pond it might be cheaper if you lower the bottom stud 1"
I thought about this to. Problem then is this project will escalate quickly. The "body" of the shock, both the lower and upper part of it, is so wide that it would begin to interfere with/hit the bracket (lower part of shockbody is close already to the bracket). Welding a pice to the bracket (make it lower) would not work out that good because of how the shock is built. Thought about adding something, like a 1" spacer between the spring and lower bracket. That would be and easy solution. The problem is doing that, it would also change the transfer link angle and the tranfer link pipe might also end up to short
I hope to sell the shocks to someone, already made a 4 sale add on them.. I dont really like to engineer my way out of a problem, when the problem can easily be corrected by just getting the correct part.
-Any one out there have any idea on how to measure a correct shock extension hight, when running Calvert rear springs
Thanks /Tom

I say run the shocks you have. For racing you want 1-1/2 inches sticking out at rest. You need the rest of the travel for extension. If the rear shocks top out when you launch the suspension will unload.

You need to measure full extension of your suspension and ride height and you can measure colasped lenght. This will tell you what you need. The worst thing for racing is topping out the shock.

Gentlemen What do you guys think about this solution? Mount a 1/2"-1" lowering block between the spring and shockmount? http://www.manciniracing.com/alpebiallobl.html That would give the shock the 1-1.5" of free travle.. -Yes, it would change the transfer link angle a little steeper -Is that, would that be an issue? Can any one think of any other issue/s with this solution??? /Tom

Hello Gentlemen Made an order for 1" lowering blocks. Gonna mount them between the spring and shockmount to get a little more shock rebound travle.. New question... The front AFCO DA shocks, how do they fit? The lower mount of the shock is so wide, does it fit the stock lower control arm mount or do you have to do some massaging of the control arm? And what about the little lower adjustment button on the shock, can you get to it easily or?? Does anyone who runs the Afco front shocks have a pic on how they mount to the lower controlarm? Thanks! /Tom
