How do I disconnect it from the steering box?

In stripping down the interior I have the column unbolted from the firewall and could easily pull it out but I am not sure how to disconnect it from the steering box.

To be honest, my box has a leak anyway so I may just go ahead and replace it too when I get the column out.

I did a few google searches and I see that there is a rod with splines that comes out of the gear box but I assume there is a button or retainer that I need to remove first before I start banging on it with a deadblow hammer!

Have you removed the roll pin yet?

You need to remove the roll pin that goes thru this coupler: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mopar-B-E-Body-P...e1d&vxp=mtr

In the pic you can see the 2 holes in the right side of the coupler. That is where the roll pin is. Once the pin is removed, the coupler may have to be pried off the gear box splined shaft.

Here is another picture. The pin in the left center is what has to be removed. This pic is from GTX so the components may differ slightly but it is the same idea

Take a good look at what you're taking apart...There's a master spline on the steering box and the box/coupler need to go back together using it as the reference...
Disconnect the wiring connectors, unbolt the firewall plate and the upper column support bolts, drive the coupler rollpin out, then drop the column down off the two dash frame studs making sure the ground wire is disconnected and have someone help the coupler apart while you pull the column out and you're there...

Excellent! I will tackle that today. I already have new switches so I need to get the column out and take it apart for cleaning and painting and new electrical. While I have it out, I think I will go ahead and get a Firm Feel stage 2 since my current steering box has some wobble and its leaking a little bit.

Thanks again guys!

I put a Stage II box in my Challenger and love it.

If you have Saginaw power steering I strongly recommend this free and easy mod to reduce power steering pump pressure. This mod along with the Stage II box will give you close to a modern car feel of the road, providing everything underneath is tight with the steering and suspension.

As I recall I installed 1/8 thick stack of washers, I'm thinking about adding more.
