I'm not going to lie... But that's one of my drivetrain options I've been thinking about for the Dart. Maybe not as crazy as 600 hp though.
it wouldn't be a completely crazy idea, I can only imagine how little that engine weighs -

About 250 lbs from my research... I'm not sure if that includes a turbo but add a 100 lbs for the turbo, tubing, intercooler, and accessories. There are a couple people who have bolted it up to a Chevy MA5 with a Jeep Liberty bellhousing. They have adapter plates to bolt it to a small block transmission so I wonder if it would be compatible with a T56.

What's the SRT-4 weigh? Back in the day I figured the IROC R/T Daytona motor would be a lot of fun in an A-body, so why not an SRT-4 setup? Good mileage, great power, classic styling...wrong sound!

SRT4 weighs about 2900 lbs. So essentially my Dart would be a 6-speed rear wheel drive SRT4 that might be a touch lighter and better looking. The reasons you presented are all reasons as to why I'm thinking about doing it. The sound can be fixed or toned down though.

they made 25000 SRT4s and tens of thousands more turbo PT cruisers all the way to 2009. its a much better motor (parts wise) than a turbo III.
The SRT4 engine weighs more than you think. closer to 350 with manifolds/accessories and it is tall. Then you also need intercooler, piping, etc... There are a couple people working on A-body swaps right now, i kicked it around half halfheartedly as well. The issue that i can see is that a good street able e85/stage3 turbo will do 400ft and 400HP. you can do that with a MILD v8 all day. and not have as much torque right off idle to 2500. 3000 on up it will run great.
In the end it would be a giant PITA. cool but a pain. I'm going 5.7 hemi as soon as i can stand to have my car out of commission... which is why the engine is still on the stand for 4 years.
People are having troubles with the SRT4 head in a RWD configuration as it positions the intake and exhaust manifolds in the wrong directions. Some people are going with a 420A head as it flips the direction and uses the same mounting pattern while others are making custom manifolds. I know of 3-4 projects on FABO that are doing the swap. About 350 whp and torque would be my goal, but I want to run it on 91 octane.
Gen III Hemi is a really cool swap but I just don't like how everything is so tight in the engine bay. I like the uniqueness of the SRT4 swap and how open it is. It will give you a little more room to work, be a little cleaner, and you can add more to it.
Either way, I'd like a T56 in the car so with a small block bellhousing or Gen III bellhousing I have 3 different engine options. But, like you said, it's just a half hearted idea till I get my Dart running on all 4's again. I'd definitely want a more fun daily driver or another "toy" car the next time the Dart goes out of commission.

SRT4 swaps, there are a lot of people that have done this with Fox Body Mustangs, Dodge Colts, on and on, we like doing it with the first generation Neons. We are building a 96 Neon with SRT4 motor swap, SRT Neon Brake Swap, plug and play stage 3 Turbo with toys, NDETCS traction control and anti lag, Srt Trans with billet components, Rota Slipstream Wheels. Car should weigh in at 2400lbs and easily make 385 WHP. Should run somewhere around 11.00s on slicks with open exhaust. Nothing like having a lot of fun on the street with a car that looks like just a small two door driver that just does not go fast. We also have a 2004 SRT4 Neon all stock and an 2005 SRT4 Neon with some toys for fun. The 1996 Neon is being built for a class called Time Tech. So do the SRT4 swap, it is not all about the easy was to do things. Take a look at this Colt that has an SRT4 Swap running rear wheel drive. Looks like he has no problem with making it run or fit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hreTfjYMPA0

See, I was thinking about that recently. An SRT4 swap in a Neon coupe would be faster and much more of a sleeper than if it was in my Dart. However, my Dart would have larger tires and brakes to better handle the power. The weight distribution may be a bit better too.
