Hi all.

I do not very often post anything on here. Simply because I hardly ever get any replies.

Still tho', I'd like to ask for help identifying a TorqueFlite auto trans by the stamped numbers on the caseing's left (driver) side of this transmission. I don't even know if it's a 904 or a 727.

The second "box" is very hard to read, and may be an I or a K. So please take this into consideration if you know anything about this stuff.

The stamped number is as follows: PI or PK 4412001 8785 7481. The casting number is as follows: 746-5.

I would be very thankful for any help.

Einar in Norway

Hi Einar,
Sorry to hear you don't get too many answers here. Lots of knowledgeable folks here. Don't give up on us.
Appears to be an '86 Diplomat, Gran Fury, 5th Avenue 904 from behind a 318.
Here's a link for trans. #s-

http://mymopar.com/downloads/transguide.pdf

4412001 is the # (at the bottom of the page). Also has a picture of a 727 and 904 side-by-side.

Good luck.

I can't help you with the numbers, but if you look at the pan, the 904 trans is reasonably square, with the 727 pan having a "kickout" on the passenger side front, where the dipstick goes in.

Good luck!

Next four digits should be the manufacturing date related to the 10000 day calender. Jan 1 1985 is day 8558 and Jan 1 1986 is day 8923.

Your transmission is an A-904 variant called the A-998, because it came behind a 318 in the mid '80s. It has the lower gearset with IIRC a 2.74 First gear.

Are all 998s lockup torque converters too?
The one I have in the Cuda is. Love that low first gear set.

Hello "dogdays".

Thank you very much for the additional information. I am of the "old school", meaning my main interest is in what may be considered today as old cars. I own Chrysler corp. cars from 1950 to 1986. My main interest are the cars from mr. Exner's period, the socalled ForwardLook (www.forwardlook.net) cars which goes from 1955 to 1961. Later than 1970, I don't know very much about any cars after that. About the MOPARs from '55 to '61 I belive I know quite a lot. Even tho' I do own a few 70's Volares and Aspens, I don't know much about these cars eighter. I also own a 1976 Valiant and a 1976 Dart. The 1986 Dodge Daytona Turbo Z, Targa that I own is an interesting car, but with the 4-banger ............... I also used to own a 1969 Dodge Charger R/T, 440 Magnum. It had all the options that HP car do not usually have. It was one of a total of 129 units produced with an electic sun-roof. The only car in my whole life that I regret selling.

Anyway (get carried away), as for the trans mentioned above,I sold this trans to a friend of mine who's going rebuild it and beef it up a bit. I see another guy asking about if these A-998s are all lock-up transmissions. If mine is, I guess you just can't use it without a lock-up converter ? If it is a lock-up trans, I'm afraid my friend can't use it. Since I am an extremely honest person, it would be nice to know if mine is a lock-up unit. Then I just have to get my friend another trans.

Sorry for bothering you guys with all this, but if my friend got the wrong trans, I better get him anotherone to put his mony into.

Thank you so much again to all of you, spending time and effort to help me. Very much appreciated.

All the best from Einar in norway.

Quick, on my way to work.

Lock up will have machined nub on front of in put shaft for bushing (bearing) surface.

At top of this page, hit google torqueflite identify. It is strictly old moparts topics ... I think.

Works for me most times? Hopefully!

No. The 998 was introduced in '74 but the lockup didn't arrive until '78.
