I like the sound of the pioneers over the infinity. its personal preference though. I found the under dash kit in the installers section of best buy. You will have to rewire the deck into the car as the two will have different plugs. I am going to be doing a similar swap this winter changing my cheap 6x9's to pioneer. http://www.sonicelectronix.com these guys seem to have pretty good prices.

I agree. The biggest difference is the efficiency of the speakers. Pioneers have SPL sensitivities of 94(or more)db at one watt. In both their home and automotive speakers they lead the pack in efficiency.
Close to or tied to Pioneer in SPL is Jensen TriAxials. The speaker cones in Jensen do not last as long as the Pioneers exposed to the sun in the rear deck so I would still go with the Pioneers.
I am thinking of putting a black speaker grill cloth over the new ones in the current rebuild to see if I can preserve them a bit more.

I wouldn't get to caught up in the efficency of the speakers. In theory, the higher sensitivity would "do more" with the same amount of power but I have heard that some of these manufacturers use slightly different methods to attain these vaues hence they could be off by few dB (just like their amps power rating in watts). Just about any set of 6x9s from a name-brand mfr. will be close of the sensitivity.
I have always steered clear of Jensens, at least their head-units...I have heard their speakers are fairly good. Sony Xpodes were always those speakers/amps that looked really cool but didn't perform. The Xplode amps especially were a freaking joke...well they looked nice....

I was thinking of leaving the stock radio in the dash and hooking up another under the seat or trunk with a remote.

Get yourself a little amplifier and some decent 6 x 9's.

Why not put it in the dash? This should be a din mount and all you do is fit the sleeve to your dash and slide the jvc in. It would be a whole lot easier and cleaner. Also try using the 6x9's that you already have. They may work out fine. You really need an amp if you want a good quality sound and most middle to high end speakers won't sound good at all without an amp. So buying good speakers isn't always the right decision as they sound like crap without an amp. Even with some of these newer head units that have 50x4 output, it's not enough power. I have found that using an amp and factory speakers can sound better than good speakers without an amp.
