I have a '99 Ram 5.2l. The "check gages" light came on and I noticed the voltmeter was around 12v. I made a stop and turned the engine off. When I started it up the light was out and the gauge was normal at 14v. After a while it came back on and the meter dropped to 12v again.

Would this indicate a bad battery or bad alternator ??

You should probably check it when it does it, with a voltmeter at the battery. It may be lying about the no charging. My 01 durango did that in pouring rain on a trip to the Nats from Chi. It kept charging the whole time. I figured some lame connection someplace that was compromised by rainwater. Next time I started it, all was well, and it never did it again for years.

It was the batteries in my 04 2500 Ram when it happened to me last year.
