Some gibberish I scribbled down this morning.
Good news / bad news ?
I bopped down to the Dorothy Day drop in center today with two missions on my mind. I cleaned out a bunch of cold weather stuff I either no longer fit into or don't wear enough to miss. Let's face it ......... no one needs a dozen hoodies. Half dozen I can see. So I had those , some sweaters and sweat shirts , a couple nice pairs of insulated boots , a few flannel shirts. People drop bags of clothes at the curb and it gets rifled through by the downtrodden and hopefully put to good use. I forgot the bag , so I was hanging it on the iron fence in front of the place and quickly drew a small crowd who could use the stuff a [Edited by Moparts - Family Friendly Site - Keep it clean] load more than I could. For a variety of reasons , I am no stranger to folks like this. So I was comfortable engaging in light hearted banter with them. I had a Minnesota Wild hoodie with me , and as I hung it up , one of them remarked " Wow , that's really nice.......but after last night , I don't know , man. " The Los Angeles Kings basically kicked the [Edited by Moparts - Family Friendly Site - Keep it clean] out of the Wild last night , so I told him " Sorry Pal , I'm fresh out of Los Angeles hoodies ". We shared an honest laugh and it felt really good to me. Then I went inside for part two. They have some semblance of security there , because as you might well imagine , they get some live wires from time to time. So the woman behind the glass slid it aside and asked " can I help you ? " I told her " I don't know.......can I help you ? " They put on a thanksgiving feed and I figured I could wash a few dishes if nothing else.......mop a floor ? What ever. It seems they were chock full of volunteers. And I guess that is a good thing. I have never done anything quite like that before..........that wasn't court ordered anyway. Long story , and as per usual , I digress. Before I headed out , I did some research on line and saw where free meals would be offered in the metro. One church listed was taking reservations........up till November 21st. So I figure they must fill up. And the food must be incredible. lol There is a network among those of the street , and a secret like that would not last long............I could see reservations if that is the case. So...........should I have brought some evening wear as well. Perhaps a few black ties ? Stew bum ..... party of one ? I tried to drop the clothes off at a place where the homeless jungle up , but given the temperatures , I hope they were all either inside or down south. There was no one around , and it was pretty bare compared to it's usual signs of " life". There is another place where they have ........... I dunno.........their version of a mall I suppose. That is not far from my house and is more of the traditional hobo jungle. Near where a couple rail lines meet and far enough away from the world that the law would have to spend some effort to get at you. There has always been a supply of clothes , matches or lighters , guitar picks , pencils and paper and other assorted items that could come in handy of you found yourself there and needing. Take what you need and leave what you can. Messages are left for others and it is a real insight into their community. I reckon I'll hit them for Christmas. But here is where it all ties up , ribbon , bow and card. I was not feeling particularly thankful this Thanksgiving. It isn't that I take my blessings for granted. I am loved by others and that is about as generous as it gets. I really don't know how to explain it. But I just was not in the holiday season wheelhouse , and honestly was feeling a bit lost. I usually have a real handle on things like this. Now I do. As dim as the lights are in your world , you do not have to look too far to find someone who has it worse. [Edited by Moparts - Family Friendly Site - Keep it clean] me ! I got the blahs ? I have a home. I have the essentials life requires with motherf&%#@ing change ! My " needs ' could easily fall into the " wants " pile. In short , I have very little to complain about. So look around..........look where the lights are not so bright. Where disappointment could be viewed as a positive force in one's life because it feels so much better than despair. They definitely did not all call that particular shot that put them where they are. Some of their stories are so sad that they make me want to cry. Then I see the positive outlook they manage to put up and I wonder. How ? Some people are never beaten. Many of them are certainly better at being happy that a lot of us. Over the years , there have been several who I was proud to call my friend. So no...........I am not thankful that I am not one of them. I am thankful that I can help some of them. There are a zillion ways to do it.......I really like the Salvation Army if you don't roll like I do. Myself , I like to rub elbows , say ' Howdy ' and feel real emotion. Down there , it is very real. Not always pleasant , but as genuine as life itself. If each of you could do just one thing for someone less fortunate in the next month , then all my pointless blather has suddenly taken real meaning. And you will get that free buzz that most any selfless act gives. But best of all , you will have helped make this world just a bit better than it was yesterday. Happy Thanksgiving.
