I just bought a 1999 5.9 cummins with a 47re trans, intercooler, radiator and all of the wiring harness and computer. I dont know much about diesels so I dont really know what Im getting into here. Anyone have any advice for me. I know its very heavy. Do I mount it solid or rubber mounts? I have a fuel cell in the truck but not sure what kind of fuel pump to run. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Your gonna need a whole front chassis and it might
be real hard to find it.. I'm guessing a 2500 K-member
and front end will bolt on... you might consider a
in tank lift pump for the fuel system.. I put a elec
one in my 95 from a currant production diesel

I would try asking this question on one of these forums

Even the 2500 Diesel suspension was pretty sketchy on the early Cummins powered Dodges. I know people do convert half tons, but would expect the even lighter half ton components to have a really short life.

The frame is basically the same from 1500-3500 non duallys.

The cummins will bolt right into the 1500 with the right trans and the factory cummins mounts and such.

The difference in weight from a v8 to a cummins is like having a couple big guys sitting on the hood.

Now just because it will bolt up does not mean it is a good idea, the 1500 suspension is flimsey and will not live a long life with the extra weight on it.

I am picking up the engine and trans this sunday. It will be interesting. I have learned a lot about cummins already. I have read a hand full of people have done this same basic swap. There trucks seem to handle the weight. I learned that I can put 2500 or 3500 2wd springs in it or I could just put a set of airbags in the springs to help hold it up. This should be a fun project. I will probly put a decent lift pump on it to start with and a mild tune and I am sure down the road it will get better injectors. Most likely the tranny isnt going to last long so I am sure that will be one of the first things needing upgrades.

Thats funny as they don't seem to handle the weight of a V6 worth beans much less a straight 6, I mean we are constantly doing ball joints and tie rod ends on them.

If the truck would have had the stock engine mounts still in the truck the engine would have bolted right in. The tranny mount bolted right into the factory crossmember. I got the passenger side engine mount made and started on the drivers side. It lowered the front of the truck down a little. Im excited to get it going.

This is the truck its going in.

you will also need to swap the raidiator support---for the intercooler...

For whatever it is worth, if you have emission inspections in your area, that swap may not pass. That engine and that truck are not in the same emission control class. Swapping engines between different classes of vehicles is often not permitted.

I'm not very knowledgeable about the 94+ models, but it may be worth your time to consider swapping in the heavier duty suspension and steering components from a Cummins powered truck. (Assuming these parts will swap.)

No emissions here. I will have to look into the core support. I have the radiator and intercooler but never did check to see if it fit.

Everyone else has spoken about the problems in shoehorning the engine in place and of course they are valid...but it is not the only weak link. Just how do you expect the 9.25" rear end to survive the torque of the Cummins?

There is a fellow in my area that is selling a Ram 1500 where he swapped in a Viper V10. I have seen that truck at local shows and he used a Ford 9" in place of the 9.25". He is parting it out on CL (See CL, Lynnwood, WA). The V10 makes comparable torque to the Cummins and whatever your goal is with this swap you will need to take that into account

several years ago I swapped a Cummins into an 84 1/2 ton.. The 9 1/4 lasted just fine till the truck rolled 6 times down a hill into a canyon late one night..

4 years now since I swapped a 12 valve/727 into a 2wd Ramcharger. Bolts right in, but you'll have to change the radiator support, or cut the radiator mounts off and use the mounts from the donor Dodge to move the radiator ahead. I changed the rearend to an 8 3/4 with 2.76 gears. It's been driven over 30,000 miles, (mostly by my girlfriend), and the 8 3/4 is still alive. I could have destroyed the rearend in no time myself! All stock, but rebuilt front suspension, and I used the 1 ton coil springs with 1 1/2 rounds cut off. Good ride height and decent ride. Stayed in alignment. 21-22 mpg. Sold it just a couple months ago, it lives in Omaha now.
