I remember well the days of match racing. We never saw many of those cars in the Northwest, but I followed it closely in every issue of Super Stock & Drag Illustrated. RIP Phil Bonner

OH I hate this. I am not a Ford man, but he was the reason I got hooked on Drag racing to begin with. I was 14 years old and attending my first ever drag race and he was match racing against a 64 Chevelle and a 64 dodge. I talked with him and he was very informative. He made me want to do what he was doing. RIP Daddy Warbucks and GOD speed.

Scat,
See that you're from TN. By any chance did you see him at Union Hill, (now Music City Raceway) in Nashville? Sounds like the same cars I saw him race. A/FX cars put on an awesome show back then, especially at that track.
I saw him run at Union Hill back in the early 60's. 63 Ford 427 IIRC.

Never knew he ran a flip top Torino. Must not have had success with it, don't remember reading too much about it in any of my old drag mags. Looks cool though. Classic posed, racer-in-a-suit shot.

Ronny I saw him in East TN. He was match racing at the old Maryville Drag Strip East of Knoxville. Maryville was built on an old rail road. Really long and straight and narrow. Don Garlits raced there on a few occasions early on in his career. Smoked themthe full length of the track. No starting lights back then. Just a starter with a flag. That Falcon was really clean and fast. If memory serves me, it had a cammer motor in it or maybe it was just a 427 Ford tunnel port. U know it is funny, the things you remember. My brother was 12 at the time and he was a Warbucks fan... until he read a story in hot rod that said Phil Bonner slicked his hair back with hair spray. We really rode him over that... You had to be there! Jerry
