I've always been completely fascinated by early B bodies. As a kid, we'd goto the racetrack and I'd drool over these cars. Never really cared about the Camaros or Novas, my dad always said they were belly button cars.
I fell in love with 64 Dodge Polara 500 anniversary edition at a car show when I was a teenager. I told myself someday I'd own one. Well about 20 years later I got it.
It started at as a bone stock street car with 88000 miles on it. After a year I converted it to a max wedge clone deal. For fun I went down the race track then the bug got me. 7 years later I have this, a 3550 lbs car, all steel less bumpers and hood, all the original chrome trim inside and out, extensive chrome moly cage and ladder bars running high 8s to low 9s and mph from 149 to 154.

Well I always felt the 62 to 64 Max Wedge cars were about the fastest street leagal Mopars ever sold to the public and I love the cool Nostalgic history of the Max Wedge cars so even if the A-bodies are lighter I love the early B-bodies the most and have to drive and race one. Besides alot of people go fast in A-bodies and Hemi cars. And by all means they are easier for us older guys to work on then bigblock A-bodies. Ron

Nice big trunk for leverage to hook up at the track and then plenty of room to haul boogie boards, beach chairs, umbrellas to take the family to the beach.

Drives and rides waaaay nicer than E bodies or A bodies I've owned and only weighs a couple hundred pounds more.

Oh speaking of weight my 63 is all stock and I added a 6 point rollbar and frame connectors. It does have a glass hood but thats it and it weighs just over 3700 lbs with me in the car and 3540 without me. It is the Sport Fury which is the top line model with alot of extra chrome and all. Ron

I run a '65 coronet. Ever since I was a kid I've loved the body style. It weighs 2675 without me in it. Granted it has a chrome moly cage, lots of lexan and fiberglass and a mild aluminum hemi, but it still looks pretty much stock. 9.41 @142 isn't anything to sneeze at. aerodynamics...not much. I guess you just like a body style, any body style, and go with it.

Just think.... You could put a real healthy smallblock Indy motor or W5 motor in it and run 9.20's or better.
My old w5 motor runs 140@ 3200+ pounds

Thank you for your thoughtful and encouraging remarks. This car is a fresh build with out of the box heads, pump gas, and exactly 12 1/4 mile runs on it to sort out some basic issues. With a bit more tuning, it should be in the 8.95-9.0 range. Comments like yours would certainly be discouraging to a younger man. I've been doing this since the 60's and cut my teeth driving AA/GS dragsters for an owner while trying to keep my 409 powered 61 Chevy together. I would think that a more appropriate response from you would be " Great! Glad to see another Mopar builder trying to run the number!" I take your sarcasm with a grain of salt. However remarks like yours that could be directed to younger Mopar builders, in addition to, among others, a slavish devotion to stock blocks (with or without stud girdles) in high horsepower applications, have been direct causes in the popularity of this site over the past several years.

Because when I started in the early sixties compact cars had six cylinders or a 273 v8 that really was a joke. B Bodies on the other hand had 383, 413 Max wedge, and 426 Max wedge engines that produced big power and in the mid sixties Mopar installed 426 street Hemi's in the B's. When I returned from Viet Nam I bought a 383 Road Runner that turned 14:30's stock with 7" redline tires and still could carry six Marines in comfort from Camp LeJeune N.C. to Detroit on the weekend. Some of those compact cars had 340's put in them so they could try to compete with the B Bodies, but Mopar had other plans like 440 six packs and Hemi's

This was ALL manufacture stock mind you and the compact car guys only got the factory performance stuff at the end of the sixties. So to answer your question the guys in my generation went for the midsized cars with the big power rather than to play with compact cars that had little power to start with (much easier on the finances back then).

OOp's I forgot the 440's but they were boat car engines until Mopar decided to use it in the '67 GTX.

Because when A-team bodies fall short and the E-xpensive bodies are new kids of the auction block over and over and C-bodies are exhausted in carrying the worlds weight, ultimately it reverts back to Plan-B.

Wait till the FMJ bodies start to rule. Wait! are those my initials? LOL.

Most probably more aerodynamic than the 61's-62's, 64' and 65's.
